Lisa let out a bitter laugh. “I worked hard to become CEO. But my dad said it’s only temporary. Sooner or later, I’ll have to hand it over to Rolf.”

Ayla frowned. “Why are you telling us this?”

Halle nodded. “Aren’t you worried we might tell him?”

“Not at all. I’ve made my choice. I’m now on the opposite side of Rolf. We’re on equal footing.”

“But he’s your brother,” Ayla said.

Lisa saw that Ayla didn’t fully trust her. “You can tell him what I think if you want. Rolf is cold. He doesn’t get along with you, but if he finds out, he’ll warn our dad. Then I lose my advantage.”

Halle said, “But our abilities are limited…”

Lisa looked at her kindly, though her eyes were serious. “No. You’re very useful to me.”

Halle looked confused.

“Rolf now runs the tech branch and developing a big language model. If it works, he’ll get a position at headquarters as vice president. With my dad supporting him, he’ll replace me in a few years.”

Lisa continued, “Your LugiX is strong, but it’s a product from three years ago. It needs an upgrade. Once it’s upgraded and running well, it could take over the market. Rolf won’t be able to keep up. Even if he goes to headquarters, he can’t impress anyone. Then I can pressure him easily. He won’t beat me.”

A sharp edge flashed in Lisa’s eyes as she spoke.

Her expression softened. “The reason I asked you two here today is simple. Ms. Kinsman, whatever funding, connections, or resources you need for research, just ask. I’ll do everything I can. And I hope you work fast.”

Ayla couldn’t help asking, “Why me?” She knew Lisa had no idea she built LugiX.

Lisa looked at Ayla and smiled. “Just a feeling.”

Ayla said, “You’re so logical, Ms. Alvarado. You trust your feelings?”

“Even if I don’t know how you’re connected to Mr. Storm, my gut says getting close to you will help me–whether he’s involved or not.”

Lisa added in a simpler tone, “Maybe it’s just a vibe. I like your way of doing things.”

She had barely finished when Ayla’s phone buzzed

Draven texted, “Meryll said you’re out. Where are you? I’ll pick you up.”

Ayla blinked and quickly turned to Lisa. “Give me a moment, I’ll be right back.”

She grabbed her phone and typed, “Are you home? If you are, no need to come get me.”

“I’m out.”

Ayla didn’t reply immediately.

Another message from Draven appeared. “What’s your

address?”

Ayla sent her location. “I might be here another hour or so. No need to rush.”

“Okay,” Draven said.

Ayla and Draven had been neighbors for a long time. They never usually went home together, but now that they lived in the same place, his picking her up seemed normal–just a regular thing.

Ayla hadn’t driven that day because she thought she might go for a drink with Halle.

Last time, she hadn’t drunk because she was driving, and Halle had teased her about it several times. Tonight, Ayla felt ready to have a couple of drinks.

“Ms. Alvarado, Ayla is the most outstanding person in my eyes. If you like her, that’s a big plus for me,” Halle said.

While Ayla handled her messages, Halle added, “We’re getting along well. If you end up leading the Alvarado Group, I’d be so happy–another strong woman in charge!” She smiled. “Honestly, I don’t like your brother.”

Lisa understood Halle was setting up the conversation.

She followed along. “When we were kids, Rolf and I were close. But as we grew up, we each looked out for ourselves.”

Rolf stopped caring about her, and in public, he didn’t show her

respect.

Lisa wasn’t sad–just a little disappointed. She wished she could have the kind of close brother- sister bond that Ayla had with her brother. If it wasn’t possible, she wouldn’t force it.

Because more than sibling feelings, Lisa craved power. With power, Rolf–out of emotion or
