Chapter 417 Is That a Crime?
Halle thought about it and decided to change the subject. She commented on how much James’s style had changed since moving to Trensea. “Why are you dressed like that? Your whole vibe feels different.”
His fashion sense really had improved a lot. It suited James’s looks, even though it completely clashed with his personality..
“I hired a stylist to put together my outfits every day. Seriously, before this, I never cared. Thought it was a hassle and pointless. I mean, I’m a guy. A pair of gym shorts was enough. But the results are real. Since I started cleaning myself up, I actually look pretty decent. I can almost stand looking at myself now. The number of people stopping me to ask for my number has doubled.”
James’s real motivation was Halle. She was extremely refined. Her clothes, her taste, her lifestyle. Everything was meticulous. If he kept looking like a rough caveman, she’d probably get annoyed just looking at him. So he changed. He’d even started wearing cologne. James had never done anything like this in his life.
Halle ignored him.
James raised a brow. “What, are you jealous? If you are, just say it. I can delete every number I added. How about that?”
Halle didn’t have much of an appetite. After a few bites, she was full. She didn’t want to keep tangling with this annoying neighbor. “I’m going to rest. Mr. Reagen, please leave.”
“I can leave. But you have to tell me why you were crying,” James said. “Too much work pressure?”
Lately, all she cares about is work. That’s fine. At least she didn’t get a new boyfriend.
Halle crossed her arms. “What does it have to do with you?”
“If it’s not work stress, then what is it?” James said. “Tell me, and I’ll go.”
Halle said, “And if I don’t?”
“Then I’ll stay right here. It’s not like we haven’t slept together before. I’ve considered you one of my own for a long time. I know you wouldn’t take advantage of me while I’m asleep, coveting my looks and my body and getting handsy with me, Ms. Kinsman.”
Halle glared at him.
She pointed at the door and smiled faintly. “Get out.”
“That’s pretty rude, Ms. Kinsman. Bullying me because I’m weak and defenseless, huh?”
She rolled her eyes. “Mr. Reagen, I swear I’m gonna lose control and beat you up very soon. You should go find somewhere else to sleep. If you really can’t, I’ll get you a room. I’ve got money. I can book you a year
at the best hotel.”
James hesitated, then got shy. “Ah, forget it. If you really lay hands on me, I’ll accept it. From then on, I’m yours. Do whatever you want with me.”
Halle looked genuinely curious and asked seriously, “Were you skipped during human evolution?”
“Hey, you might be right. Maybe I really missed the good timing. I somehow skipped the age of civilization and lived like an animal. And now, I’m in heat. My fault. I’m a straggler. The shame of evolution. I don’t know what purity is.”
Halle almost facepalmed herself.
“Tell me why you were crying.”
“Is it that important?”
“Yeah. It’s important.” James smiled and said seriously, “I’m afraid one day I might make you cry. If I know the line in advance, I can keep my distance and know how to act around you.”
He was actually worried about her.
Halle saw that his expression had turned a bit more serious, even though his words were still nonsense. If James really knew what ‘boundaries’ meant, she wouldn’t be grabbing him by the collar like this.
“So if I tell you, you leave?”
“Yeah. Deal.”
Halle snorted. “I was happy for Ayla. I got too excited and couldn’t help crying.”
James took critical damage. “Ayla again? You like her that much?”,
Last time she got drunk and cried, it was because of Ayla too. James felt that his biggest rival might not be a man, but her good friend, Ayla.
“What do you know? My best friend got together with yours. I’m happy for her. Is that a crime?”
