“Tell me,” Ayla said.

Draven stared at her without blinking. “I was thinking, if us being in love were real, I’d hold you in my arms and kiss you until goosebumps spread all over you.”
Until you tremble beneath me.
Ayla really couldn’t handle him. Her face flushed again. “What about now?”
Draven said, “Now, I just wanna hold you.”
Draven’s arms tightened slightly. Ayla fell straight into his embrace and naturally ended up sitting on one of his legs. The man wrapped both arms around her back and held her tightly against him.
Draven adjusted his position so his face fit more closely against Ayla’s skin.
Then he let out a soft breath, as if releasing a flood of emotions, finally relaxing for a moment.
“Ayla, right now, I just wanna hold you like this for a while.”
After all the tangled emotions had settled, Draven’s heart finally grew calm. This simple embrace gave him a feeling he’d never experienced before. It was like something inside him had been filled. Satisfaction, happiness, pure joy–he felt them all.
As a child, Draven had grown used to being alone. The older he got, the more he hated anyone getting close to him. No matter who it was, once they were within three feet of him, he’d feel intense rejection and alertness. So the warmth brought by an intimate hug was truly something he was experiencing for the first
time.
Draven had never imagined that being with Ayla would feel this good, so good he couldn’t even describe it.
Just thinking that Ayla was the only person in the world who could give him this feeling made him love her so much.
Ayla only needed to exist right here, doing nothing at all, and he loved her deeply.
Because of this, Draven finally realized that his past life really had been lonely and empty. He’d just grown used to it and thought it was normal.
Now things were different. He let go of his instinctive resistance to others and held Ayla tightly, finally understanding how good it felt to have a warm, living person in his arms.
Thinking that, Draven tightened his hold even more, wishing he could fuse Ayla into his body and never separate again.
He was absolutely certain that he would never love another person in his life. If Ayla ever left him, he would only be lonely until the day he died.
Ayla was held so tightly that it was hard to breathe, yet the embrace was filled with safety and a sense of
steadiness she’d never felt before.

She wouldn’t compare Draven to Troy, but she could feel the difference herself.
When Troy was sick or drunk, not fully–conscious and in need of care, Ayla would sit by the bed and hold his hand just to feel a trace of intimacy.
There were almost no hugs or kisses. Even when she held Troy, their hearts felt impossibly far apart. There was no sense of safety or reliability, only pain and bitterness.
What Ayla was experiencing with Draven was what truly counted as being in a relationship, the feeling of mutually liking each other.
There was a sense of certainty, no constant fear of gain and loss.
Ayla was so happy that she felt on the verge of tears.
After her impulsive confession, she’d always worried that her feelings weren’t as strong as Draven’s.
But right now, she had a powerful sense that their hearts were pressed very, very close together.
This feeling came from instinct. It was as if their joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness were being shared, like some kind of resonance between souls.
Ayla had never experienced anything like this. She couldn’t be 100% sure, but there was a voice in her heart telling her that in the future, she would love Draven so deeply that she wouldn’t be able to pull herself out.
Ayla had crashed hard with Troy. She was actually very, very afraid of loving someone with her whole heart again, because she was afraid of being hurt once more.
So could she really trust Draven?
Could she be certain that when she fell deeply in love with him, this man wouldn’t suddenly change his heart and deal her a fatal blow?
Right now, Ayla wasn’t certain at all, and she couldn’t give an answer.
But Ayla had told Kaleb this before.
Her divorce from Troy was about letting go of the past and moving forward alone. If, at that point, she met someone who wanted to walk alongside her, then even if that companion later dropped out halfway, she would still keep walking on her own.
Of course, losing or being betrayed by someone who’d walked with her for a time would be devastating and incredibly painful. But Ayla would never forget the Polaris that guided her forward on her own.
No matter what happened, she would still be herself, always moving forward.
So, she needed to stay true to her own heart.
No matter what kind of relationship she was in, as long as she knew who she was and what she wanted, that was enough.
No one could predict the future. All she could do was grasp the present. So right now, she should simply
