Chapter 50 You’re Fired

It turned out to be someone familiar.

Well, “familiar” only on one side. She knew Skyla, but Skyla had no idea who she was.

Skyla heard the sound, looked over, and when she saw Halle, she didn’t bother standing up. She just nodded at her as a greeting.

Halle sat across from Skyla and glanced at John, signaling him to introduce them.

“Ms. Kinsman, this is Skyla Summer. She graduated with honors in Computer Science from Agron University and is now a PhD student at Moblosia Ivy University. We were classmates in college, and she was actually five years ahead of you, so technically she’s your senior.”

In university, Skyla’s grades were decent. When she graduated, she wrote an impressive thesis and got an offer from a top university abroad, so she became one of the outstanding graduates.

Skyla was also pretty–basically the campus belle.

John had a crush on her at first. But after realizing their status difference, he gave up.

So Skyla became his unattainable dream girl.

Now his dream girl was suddenly asking him for help. Of course, he wouldn’t say no.

After the introduction, Halle was supposed to greet Skyla. That would’ve been the normal social move.

But Halle gave Skyla a quick look, ignored her, and then turned to John instead. “Why is she looking for me?”

Skyla frowned.

John froze, too. He could feel the tension rising and immediately started sweating. “I–I don’t know.”

He looked at Skyla, a little awkward. “Uh, maybe you should explain?”

Skyla met Halle’s uninterested gaze. Halle wasn’t warm, wasn’t curious, and had zero intention of getting to know her.

Does she seriously not know who I am?

Skyla had been hanging around Troy these past few days. In Trensea’s upper circle, almost everyone knew she was connected to the Winston Group. People were lining up to fawn over her.

Even Rolf, the richest man’s son, had to ask her for favors.

Halle’s attitude caught her off guard.

Was it because Halle wasn’t qualified to enter high society? Or was she just young and rebellious, acting cocky just to put on a show and score a tiny bit of dignity for herself?

Skyla looked Halle over, pushed down her irritation, and said calmly, “I’m here to ask your company fo small favor.”

Skyla grew even more annoyed, but didn’t show it. “I’m the R&D lead at Norris Payne’s laboratory. We hit a roadblock in our project. Professor Payne has already contacted you, so you should know the details, Ms. Kinsman. I’m here today hoping you would do me the honor of assisting.”

Halle suddenly smiled and asked, “Oh? Whose honor exactly?”

Skyla finally frowned. “Ms. Kinsman, do you really not know who I am?”

She looked at John, her voice turning cold. “Explain it properly to Ms. Kinsman.”

John was just about to speak.

Halle cut him off. “No need.”

Skyla narrowed her eyes at Halle.

Halle said, “Since Professor Payne sent you here to run errands, you can go back. I’ll talk to Professor Payne directly. You’re just a team lead. You’re not qualified to discuss this with me.”

Run errands?

Not qualified?

Skyla sneered. “Ms. Kinsman, do you have a problem with me?”

Halle didn’t bother listening to her nonsense. She stood up, looked at John, and ordered coldly, “Take your errand–runner classmate out. Then come to my office.”

As she left, she glanced at Skyla and added to John, “This is a company, not a reunion venue. Got it?”

John’s hands tightened instantly. Watching Halle walk out, a bad feeling washed over him. When he turned back, Skyla’s face was dark.

He felt even more pressure. “S–Skyla…”

Skyla stood up abruptly, her gaze icy as she stared in the direction Halle had left.

“Halle Kinsman, right?”

I’ll remember this!

John quickly said, “Don’t be mad. I’ll go talk to Ms. Kinsman again-”

Halle didn’t even spare John a glance and walked out.

John didn’t even get the chance to follow her.

He didn’t take it personally. The campus belle was always aloof. Ignoring him was normal.

If she ever glanced at him one more time, he’d probably pass out from happiness.

He could still remember how fast his heart was beating when Skyla called him a week ago.

That’s why he wanted to help her and make her happy.

But now, it was obvious he had messed everything up.

Pale–faced and feeling anxious, John went to Halle’s office.

The woman sitting on the couch with her back to the door was still there.

Halle was in her boss’s chair, staring at him coldly, with more pressure than usual.

John didn’t dare look up. “Ms. Kinsman.”

“You’re fired.”

John froze. “Why?”

Halle said, “I don’t owe you an explanation. Let’s just say you’re unlucky. Go to HR. Whatever pay you’re owed, you’ll get every cent.”
