Ayla and Kaleb were just about to leave when Juliet suddenly said, “Another year’s gone. Have either of you heard from Uncle Hugh?”

“No, I can’t get in touch with him,” Ayla said.

Kaleb added, “I saw his location carlier. He was in Amazelle, then somewhere in the deserts of Central Granatia. Now there’s nothing at all. He’s probably crossing some uninhabited zone and trying to get himself killed.”

“Forget it. I’m done worrying about him. If he really dies out there, the embassy will contact me to identify the body,” Juliet said through clenched teeth.

Ayla paused when she saw how angry Juliet looked. She studied her more carefully. Juliet was a beautiful woman. Even in her early 40s, she still carried a lot of charm, her age barely showing, though there were faint lines at the corners of her eyes that makeup could not fully hide. Juliet bringing up Hugh might simply have been a sister missing her brother.

That thought led Ayla to many others. Juliet had always resented their parents for focusing all their attention on the brilliant eldest daughter. The youngest was a son, and only Juliet was constantly overlooked. She tried desperately to earn their attention. ‘Aunt Juliet,” Ayla said.

Juliet saw the seriousness in Ayla’s expression and thought something was wrong. “What is it? Can I help?”

‘It’s nothing. Just another year gone by. Take good care of your health,” Ayla said.

Juliet froze for a moment, then burst out laughing. “You’re the most thoughtful one. Don’t worry. I work out every day and lift weights. I’m in great shape, I’m aiming to live to a hundred.”

Ayla nodded. “Alright. I’ll watch you live to a hundred.”

That evening, Ayla went home to ring in the New Year with Draven. She mentioned Skyla coming to see her. “What has Troy been up to lately? I thought he would keep stirring things up. With his personality, you know him better than I do. Whether he liked me or not is one thing, but there’s no way he would take things this calmly.”

Draven knew Troy’s personality very well. The fact that Troy had not made any moves was exactly what felt strange. Draven had been keeping an eye on him. From what he had found, Troy was handling the company’s overseas business and continuing to work on new projects there. He went to work and went home. Nothing unusual.

That was the strangest part.

But for now, there were no obvious signs, and Troy was not doing anything that could be acted on.

With Troy being such an unpredictable factor, Draven could only stay on the defensive.

There was no other way. To truly control Troy would mean going after the Winstons themselves. Only after they lost power could Troy’s actions be restrained.

That was completely outside Draven’s plans.

“For now, it looks like everything he’s doing overseas is work–related,” Draven said.

He frowned, thinking of what Troy had once said, “Why do I feel like you two won’t last either?”

What could Troy possibly use to tear them apart? Even if Troy tried something, their trust in each other would not waver. Draven trusted Ayla completely, and Ayla trusted him just as much.

Ayla knew Troy had always been busy, but back when she was married to him, his business trips had rarely. lasted for months at a time.

Maybe being far away gave him space to slowly process the divorce.
