apter 756 The Strategist in the Shadows
Draven was even clingier now than he’d been when they were together.
Even though he hadn’t said it, she could feel it.
Even in front of other people, one glance between them and they both knew exactly what the other was thinking.
Ayla wasn’t in the mood for all that today. Once the serious talk was done, she was ready to head out. “Have you already told your father and Martin about us raising the children together?”
Draven’s brows drew together. “Yes. I’ve already told them.”
“And they just agreed?”
“The fight between Troy and me got ugly. I shot him, he stabbed me—it shook everyone. They took it seriously. I laid everything out about what happened when we were kids, and not just Kayla; Eric and Carmen both started reflecting on how they’d treated Troy, too.
“And you, Ayla. The Winstons didn’t treat you right. I told Martin and Eric what you wanted. They had no objections. You’re the children’s mother. You and Troy can’t be in the same space peacefully–forcing that would affect both of you, and eventually the children, too. Keeping things separate is better for everyone.”
Ayla had assumed she’d have to go negotiate in person. Every single time something came up between her and Troy, she’d been the one walking into his parents‘ faces herself.
If her own parents had been by her side, had actually doted on her, she wouldn’t have had to carry that pressure alone–going head–to–head with people who outranked her in every way.
But Ayla was used to it by now. She just hadn’t expected Draven to have already handled everything.
It felt like whenever trouble came, someone was standing in front of her saying, “Leave it all to me,” and “I’ve got it handled.”
Ayla wasn’t afraid of trouble, but trouble that lingered wore on you. This was so much better–she didn’t have to deal with the Winstons anymore.
Draven continued, “I’ve already talked to Eric. From now on, if anyone wants to see the children, all of that goes through me. You don’t have to deal with the Winstons. Just focus on the kids, be with them–and once they’re a little older, you can start doing time on both sides.”
Ayla had been listening to Draven, taking in all his arrangements. But somewhere toward the end, her gaze drifted to his lips.
He finished. Only then did she look at him.
Her eyes were bright.
Draven smiled softly. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Ayla didn’t say another word. She leaned in and kissed him.

Chapter 756 The Strategist in the Shadows
Draven was most attractive when he was solving problems.
She couldn’t help herself.
Ayla’s hand rested at the nape of his neck, his skin warm and dry against her palm. She’d kissed him first- and kissing was something she’d learned well with Draven. She had the upper hand.
But moments later, the hand at the back of his neck started tightening on its own, fingers sliding into his hair, gripping tight.
Her heartbeat was pounding up into her throat. She needed to hold onto something to feel safe.
His hand found the small of her back. One gentle pull and her whole body pressed against his chest, locked in completely.
Before, it had all been light and playful. This time, Ayla kissed him deeply.
Draven guessed that everything he’d done for the babies had hit Ayla straight in the heart. It was just what he should have done–nothing remarkable–but he hadn’t anticipated it moving her enough to come to him like this.
He’d gone four months without sex. He was a young man in his prime. In an instant, control slipped, and the heat of the kiss moved from her lips downward.
The moment he started touching her the way he used to, Ayla went completely soft in his arms.
Then, suddenly, Draven lifted his head. The desire in his eyes was still thick, but he forced himself, piece by piece, back to clarity. Ayla’s top had been pushed up from the hem all the way to her neck. He looked at her, then pulled it back down.
Ayla hadn’t planned on staying. But Draven’s careful arrangements had moved her, and she’d wanted to kiss him–and then… naturally, sleeping together wasn’t exactly uncharted territory, and that one kiss had run completely away from her. Her body was far more honest than her head. She’d wanted him, so she’d caved without a shred of dignity and changed her mind about staying.
She hadn’t expected him to suddenly stop. The sun really was
rising in the west.
Because back when they were together, she knew exactly how greedy he was. He was slammed with work. and on the rare occasion they actually had time to sleep well together, Draven would go several rounds before calling it a night. After months of nothing, the fact that he could stop himself–Ayla had to admit. she was genuinely impressed.
