Ayla’s eyes had been a little red, but at that, she burst out laughing. She gave Draven a proper once–over, then delivered her verdict. “Still sharp as ever.”
Draven’s face darkened. “I’m not old, either.”
“Who was it that told me he was having a midlife crisis?”
Draven bit her ear. “Still not old.”
Ayla was ticklish, but he was holding her too tightly to escape. She surrendered. “Yes, yes, fine, you’re not old, Mr. Storm is in his prime.”

She asked, suddenly. “Do you like my body, or do you like me?”
Draven looked at her. “I like you–which is why I like your body.”
Ayla was thoroughly satisfied with that answer. She laughed before she could stop it.
Draven’s eyes softened. What an easy little soul to please.
After breakfast, Draven took Ayla’s hand and walked her through the complex, back to the Building 7 apartment.
He hadn’t been here in a long time. Eight months of him and Ayla lived inside these walls–this place meant a great deal to him.
Ayla re–registered his fingerprints. Because of everything that had happened—all the heartbreak—they were both quiet now, but something fierce and tender moved through both of them.
Draven stepped inside and said nothing. When he walked into the living room, his eyes reddened without warning. It happened fast. A tear traced down from the corner of his eye.
Ayla saw it—and her own eyes stung instantly. She threw herself into his arms.
She held on as hard as she could.
Draven might have a sensitive streak in his genes, but he was by no means an emotional person. Tears were entirely foreign to him. He didn’t know why, but returning to this home–even though they’d said and done nothing–made his tears fall silently.
Ayla’s quiet crying hit him in the chest, over and over, and the ache spread through every part of him.
Thank god she was still here.
After a long while, Draven finally spoke. “Ayla, this time, we’re going to make it work. You understand?”
