Chapter 840 The Backseat Treatment

5 Pearls

James meant some of what he said earlier, but not all of it. He was only being polite because he didn’t want to scare her away. But he really did want to see her, eat with her, and talk. He’d kept things so low-key, just some casual chatting. And now she was using the “I have a fiancé” excuse on him?

Hold on, it had been almost a year now. Was her fiancé still not dead?

Word was their daughter was already two, and Halle still hadn’t called off the engagement. Had she lost

it?

James kept his cool. As long as he kept circling her in every possible way, he was still in the game.

He watched Halle put on a whole performance of making a phone call right in front of him. When her eyes flicked over to meet his, she gave him a look telling him to hurry up and get in.

James’s lips curled up into a full smile as he walked over to the passenger side, only to find the door wouldn’t open.

He tapped on the door.

Once the window came down, Halle tilted her head over. “Sorry, my fiancé says you can’t sit in the passenger seat.”

“Oh?” James laughed. “He’s kind of petty, isn’t he?”

“Mr. Reagen, if you had a fiancée, would you let some random woman sit in your passenger seat?”

James thought about it. “Fair point.”

James smoothly slid into the back seat, putting maximum distance between himself and Halle.

Halle settled in to focus on driving. The way she drove was kind of out of step with her sharp personality-both hands clamped on the wheel. James was reminded of grade-schoolers sitting at their desks with their hands folded, and honestly, it was adorable.

Halle was only 25 this year, and he was 31. James’s personality kept him looking ageless, and his looks kept him locked into a youthful charm.

Most of his friends were also pretty young, and when they hung out, age tended to fade into the background.

Like with Ayla, they hung out like peers, with James way more “lively” than Draven.

But with Halle, James could never quite shake the age gap. He was a full six years older than
