Chapter 849 The Weight of Knowing
Halle frowned and walked over to Lemon, crouching down in front of him.
Finisher
The poodle lifted his head slightly, gave Halle one lazy glance, then flopped back down on the pavement. Even his curls looked limp and defeated
Halle was loose and relaxed at this hour. She squatted there and gave the dog a pat on the head. “What’s wrong with you? Are you dying? You look completely wiped out.”
Apparently offended by the commentary, Lemon ignored her.
“Where’s your dad? Got tired of how fat you are and dumped you outside?”
Halle scratched behind Lemon’s ears and felt her hand sink into a roll of pudge. “Good Lord. How did you let yourself go like this? You’ve been eating everything in sight.”
She was fully absorbed in petting the dog and didn’t notice James walk up behind her.
His voice drifted over, lazy and amused. “Don’t body-shame my son. He doesn’t need that kind of pressure.”
Halle’s hand paused mid-stroke. She straightened up slowly and found James standing there with we wearing house clothes. He’d clearly just gotten out of the shower and hadn’t bothered drying off before coming outside.
She looked at Lemon’s girth, then back at James. “He’s shaped like a beach ball. This is a health issue at this point.”
“Since when do you care so much about my kid?”
“Why’d you leave him outside in the middle of the night?”
“I just came out to get him after my shower.”
“You didn’t bring him inside before you showered?”
James smiled. “Okay, jokes aside. He’s gotten unhealthy. I was planning to take him for another walk after 1 cleaned up. See how he’s panting? That’s from running laps. He’s out of shape.”
Halle glanced down at the dog, wheezing on the pavement. No wonder the barking had sounded so pitiful. “I thought you genuinely didn’t mind him being fat.”
“I’d love my kid at any size. But unhealthy is where I draw the line, so we’re doing intensive walks. The goal is to slim him down within a month.” James was grinning.
Halle turned to head inside.
James’s eyes drifted over her dress, and the question came out casually. “Where’d you go? You weren’t out long.”
She hadn’t planned on telling him anything. But something made her say it. “Went to see my fiance. We

ere discussing wedding plans
James blinked, “Wedding plans?
Halle nodded. “We’ve been engaged for a while now Edgar’s back in the country, both sets of parents are pushing for it, and I’m 25. It’s time to start thinking about it’
James’s first reaction was blank confusion. He was 31 and sull felt like he was in his 20%. Some of his friends had gotten married, sure, but plenty of them were already divorced. Mow of the guys he knew couldnt keep it in their pants long enough to commit, so they just didn’t bother.
Marriage had never been high on James’s priority list. How was Halle already doing this?
Once it sank in that she wasn’t messing with him, he understood Troy’s insanity all over again. Right now. at this moment, James wanted nothing more than to ship Edgar to another continent. Buy some time Slow things down.
He didn’t say anything. There was nothing good to say. And he sure as hell wasn’t going to wish her well They parted without another word.
Back inside, Halle got a rare phone call from Benjamin. The usual check-in. How was she doing, how work. She made it through a few exchanges before her patience ran dry.
She could charm business partners for hours, toss out flattery and polished conversation without breaking a sweat. But a few minutes with her own family left her feeling hollowed out.
She found an excuse and hung up.
After her shower, she lay in bed and her mind wandered backward, the way it sometimes did at night to a memory from childhood.
She’d been in second grade. One afternoon, nobody came to pick her up from school, so Benjamin sent one of his employees instead.
A pretty young woman, warm and friendly. Halle took to her immediately. They became close East, hanging out a few times outside of school, and when Halle heard the woman’s birthday was coming up. she decided to get her a present.

She showed up at Benjamin’s office with the gift, and what she walked into in the parking garage changed everything.
The woman was in the back seat of Benjamin’s car, straddling his lap. They were kissing, and from the way their bodies were moving, doing more than that.
Halle had always been sharp for her age. In that moment, the wave of revulsion nearly knocked her over
