Chapter 867 What Could Have Been
If Halle hadn’t been so driven, nobody would have looked down on him. Edgar wanted nothing more than to smash her laptop to pieces and drag her outside to have fun with hir
But things never went his way. He grew increasingly unable to stand it. They were young, hot headed, and the fights never stopped-so his decision to take a job overseas had been inevitable.
Staying by Halle’s side every day would have suffocated him.
As for Nina, he’d originally planned to keep that from Halle But she found out. If she hadn’t. Edgar would have been perfectly happy never telling her.
He replayed their entire history in his head, start to finish. And when he was done, Edgar was crying.
He really had loved her. Truly.
His emotions were a tangled mess of grief, confusion, and a fierce, searing resentment.
They weren’t supposed to end up like this! Why did Halle have to change? Why did she have to become someone he couldn’t love?
The one thing Edgar clung to was this: he knew exactly what he felt for Halle, and he also knew that even after discovering his betrayal, Halle still hadn’t given up on him-and that told him the depth of her feelings. So they could still be together.
But Edgar refused to be the only one suffering. He wanted Halle to understand exactly how miserable he was, then guilt her into pitying him and changing herself for his sake.
That was the only way they’d survive as a couple. Otherwise, if every day going forward was this kind of self-inflicted torture, Edgar wouldn’t be able to take it.
After getting thoroughly drunk, Edgar called Nina.
At least, he had one soft place to land where he could dump all his feelings.
After Edgar had thrown his tantrum and stormed out, Halle sat alone, humming a tune and scrolling through emails on her laptop.
Hayley hadn’t come to find her, which meant she’d decided not to get involved.
Halle even suspected that Tyler and Hayley’s views on the engagement had shifted.
Sooner or later, someone would say it out loud.
“Still up?” James sent a message.
Halle responded to his messages depending on her mood. She was bored right now, so she replied.
“Not yet.”

“I want to show you something funny. And also check in
Halle replied with a single question mark
I’m not telling you until you switch to video
“Fine” Who doesn’t love gossip?
James’s video call popped up almost instantly.
They looked at each other through the screen. Halle’s display showed her own face in the main frame with James in the small window. She admired herself first-gorgeous, as always Instant mood boost.
Then, she looked at James and those hunter eyes of his.
Honestly, James’s hunter eyes were mesmerizing. The shape was like someone had drawn them on with a single, flowing line from inner corner to outer tip, with a wide crease and thick, long lashes. His eyes were bright, perpetually warm, and always carried a hint of a smile.
Halle switched the big and small frames.
Now, her entire screen was filled with James’s face. Up close, he was devastatingly handsome.
James gave her a quick once-over, then got straight to it. “I’m at a bar right now. I’m with a friend-a guy. I’m alone. No one’s buying me drinks. I’ve had one glass, and I’m staying sober from here on out, because I don’t want to do anything I’d regret.”
Halle burst out laughing. “You don’t owe me accountability. Drink as much as you want.
James winked at the camera-not because he thought he was hot and wanted to show off, but purely to make her laugh. So, it didn’t come off as sleazy. Just endearing
“I haven’t been officially promoted yet, but I can’t let my already questionable reputacion slide any further. I’m thinking ahead-staying ready at all times. Can’t let you find a single flaw.” James looked thoroughly pleased with himself.
His personality had a way of making people drop their guard without realizing it.
Halle said, “Your nonsense is already a pretty major flaw. Ticking time bomb.”
“What, you mean my sweet nothings? Please. I haven’t even called you ‘babe’ yet, and I’m already getting accused of being
nocent here. I’m just a good man who’s checking in so you don’t overthink
things.”
H
do not call me ‘babe.’ It’s revolting.
you least expect it.”
