Chapter 874 No Longer the Same
James tucked his feelings away. He wasn’t about to let the mood curdle or dump his own anger onto Halle, because tension didn’t solve anything.
This wasn’t even that big a deal. Everyone runs into trash sooner or later.
On the surface, James looked relaxed and unbothered. But that didn’t mean he didn’t care.
He was keeping score.
James kept his thoughts to himself. What came out of his mouth was pure comedy. “Edgar didn’t even make it hard for me. His character is this far gone, and he still thinks he’s competing? I win by default.”
Halle’s mood was already lifting on the back of James’s humor. She didn’t even feel embarrassed that he’d overheard everything.
“You’re an optimist.”
“Absolutely. All my friends say hanging out with me is the most relaxing, fun thing in the world.” James asked, “And you?”
Halle was about to answer.
James, shameless as ever, cut in first. “You have to be objective and fair about this. You just survived Edgar’s weapons-grade idiocy. Now that you have a comparison, if you still won’t side with me, I’m going to be genuinely hurt.”
After saying that, he picked up his glass, clinked it against hers on the table, and took a smug sip.
Halle thought about it seriously. The moment James appeared, she’d felt safe-like running into family in the middle of a crisis.
Because whenever she was around James, she could instantly feel that they were the same kind of person. They clicked. Same wavelength, same energy.
Nothing like being around Edgar, where any word or facial expression could detonate a landmine.
Being with someone you actually vibed with was effortless.
Right now, Halle felt effortless.
Even James’s occasional shameless jokes and casual physical proximity didn’t bother her. It was just… how they were. Bickering that never stuck.
Halle raised her glass and drained it. “Fine. I’ll admit it. Mr. Reagen, you have a great personality, tons of friends, and you’re a certified people magnet. Hanging out with you is comfortable and easy have no complaints whatsoever.”
After all, James had been the fastest person to become Ayla’s Incud

Beyond being warm, loyal, and fun, there was no deeper explanation needed.
He was just a genuinely good person.
It was only Halle’s own walls-and her awareness of James’s identity-that had kept him at arm’s length.
James looked thoroughly satisfied. “Great. Then, you’re staying at your place tonight.”
Halle considered it. “Deal. I’ll go check on Lemon.”
Edgar’s behavior had obliterated whatever goodwill remained.
Halle also realized it really was time to move forward. Even though she still believed the past had been
beautiful.
But people changed. Changed beyond recognition. She had to bow her head and accept that some things couldn’t be held, no matter how tightly you squeezed. That was the cruelty of growing up.
She and Edgar had been walking in opposite directions for a long time now.
They’d stopped being the same kind of person ages ago.
Edgar had delivered his ultimatum to Halle and was feeling very pleased with himself. He was certain he d finally gained the upper hand.
He went back to the private room, fed his classmates a lazy cover story, and moved on
After the reunion, he swung by Nina’s place, sweet talked her for a while, slept with her, and then headed
home.
He’d lingered at Nina’s on purpose–to make Halle wait. If he came home too early. Halle would he wanted to make up. Better to let her stew, spiral, and marinate in her own misery unal she finally recognized the error of her ways.
Except when Edgar came home late that night, Halle wasn’t there.
His brain short-circuited. Halle hasn’t come howet
