Chapter 884 Clipped Wings

Halle wasn’t at peace with it either.

The best thing she had ever carried in her heart had been crushed by Edgar himself. How could that not hurt? How could that not break her?

“Didn’t you want to settle things with me? Fine. Let’s put everything on the table today. When exactly did you stop loving me?”

It took courage for Halle to admit that Edgar no longer loved her. Maybe the attachment he showed now was nothing more than a habit, built from all the years they had known each other.

If you truly loved someone, you wouldn’t get together with another woman and have a child with her. Edgar had stopped loving her a long time ago.

Today, Halle wanted the truth, no matter how ugly it was. “Edgar, don’t chicken out. Tell me. Admitting you don’t love me isn’t the end of the world. I’m begging you-say it now. Stop being so pathetic.”

The word pathetic hit Edgar where it hurt. His all on you. All of it is your fault!”

Halle stared at his reddened eyes, unable to tell whether he was truly about to cry or whether his body was simply reacting to the intensity of his emotions. She gritted out, “Then, tell me what I did wrong.”

She wanted to know, too. What

Because he had once mattered

had she done wrong

e wanted to hear what he truly thought.

Edgar’s voice turned hoarse. Maybe emotion had finally taken over, or maybe Halle had truly never considered this side of him. Either way, he ripped himself open. “It’s because you’re too good. You’re so driven, so successful… I felt like I couldn’t keep up. Being with you just made me feel inadequate to be your partner. Being with you made me feel inferior. I couldn’t handle that blow to my ego.”

Halle stared at him, stunned.

Edgar reached for her and pulled her into his arms, but his strength seemed to drain out of him. He slid lower and lower until he was almost kneeling in front of her, his forehead pressed against her stomach. “I stopped knowing how to be with you a long time ago. When I betrayed you, I panicked too. I even slapped myself. But I didn’t know what else to do. I only knew I loved you. I couldn’t bear to lose you.”

He lifted his head and looked up at her, tears unmistakable in his eyes. “Can you not leave me? Please don’t go.”

Now, Halle understood that Edgar had a sensitive streak. At the beginning, she hadn’t seen it. For him, saying all of this out loud must have taken something.

Because it meant admitting he felt smaller than her.

But did that make it right?

rushed

Disappointment filled Halle’s eyes. “You know what my family was like. If I didn’t fight, if I didn’t push, I’d have nothing. That’s why I worked so hard. I kept becoming better, and instead of being happy for me, you didn’t know how to face e anymore. Edgar, tell me. Is that right?TM

Edgar hadn’t expected her to stay so cold. He had shown her the most humiliating part of himself, and she still wanted to judge him?

He had suffered, too,

Why couldn’t she understand that?

His emotions surged out of control. “I know you had it hard, but you could’ve leaned on me. Why did you have to make everything so exhausting? You weren’t the only one tired. I was tired too. Being with you wore me down!”

Edgar truly could not understand it. “I protected you growing up. I could have protected you for the rest of your life, and you could have let me. What was so bad about that?”

Halle laughed, but there was no humor in it. “So that’s what you really wanted. You wanted me to depend on you forever. To need you for everything.”

Edgar said, “And why couldn’t you?”

Halle’s expression changed. “Because no. Absolutely not.”

Edgar looked like he was falling apart. “I don’t understand why!”

Halle said, “You don’t have to understand. I don’t understand why you were so determined to clip my wings, either. I used to think you understood how hard things were for me. Turns out, you only liked the moment when you got to protect me. Did you need/me weak so you could feed your pride as a man?”

No wonder Nina looked so delicate and harmless, with that soft little temper. She was exactly the kind of backdrop Edgar needed-the perfect prop to make his ego feel useful.

Halle had grown up on the edges of her own family. Her parents didn’t love her, and both of them bad other relationships outside the marriage. If she had spent her fe leaning on someone else, she would have been rootless, drifting wherever the current took her.

ľ

If she had no strength, no money, no ability of her own, then the moment Edgar changed his mind, she would lose everything and never get back up,

Betting your entire life on one person was terrifying by itself.

Edgar not only failed to understand why she had to be strong-he wanted her to grow weaker.

That was something Halle could never accept.

She had never felt him wishing for her to rise higher. Instead, she saw the hypocrisy clearly now. He wanted to pull her down with him.

At that moment, a deep, physical disgust toward Edgar rose in Halle.

Even his affair with Nina had never repulsed her this much.
