Hans felt something wrong.
"This feels staged," he said quietly. "Explosion over there, and right away a woman appears claiming medical training—then tries to force contact with you."
Something clicked in Andres's mind. "A setup?"
"Maybe," Hans said. "Too soon to say. We'd need to investigate."
Murray sighed. "If Miss Vance were here, this wouldn't be a question."
Andres and Hans both looked at him.
Murray hurried to explain. "She's smart. She'd take one look at that woman and know exactly what she was really after."
Hans nodded. "Miss Vance does have a way of making you feel… safe."
Andres didn't respond, but the thought turned over and over in his chest.
So it wasn't just him.
Somehow, without noticing, even his men had been pulled into Maeve's gravity.
…
"Maeve. Someone's here to see you."
Inside the detention center, Maeve was escorted to an interrogation room.
When the door opened, Luka sat inside, his face dark with resentment.
He gestured to the staff.
They understood immediately. They shoved Maeve inside, then shut the door with a hard, final slam.
Maeve glanced at the sealed door, then at Luka, her mouth curling. "Pulled strings, did you?"
As a local, Luka had connections in the department. That wasn't exactly news.
Every conversation with her sent his blood pressure through the roof.
Serenity Vance had been gentle, refined, elegant—how had she raised something like Maeve?
After a long, suffocating pause, Luka decided he was done wasting words.
"Your case has made waves," he said. "The public is watching."
"If this keeps escalating, do you understand what kind of ending you're looking at?"
He couldn't hide the satisfaction underneath it. The smug little mistake of a daughter who'd torn the Morales family apart was finally getting what she deserved.
Maeve tilted her head. "I'm curious too. What ending do you think I'm looking at?"
Luka lowered his voice. "Once you're in a place like this, walking out quietly isn't easy."
"All I have to do is lean on the right people. If I want you to live, you live. If I want you dead… you die."
