Luka's eyes were hard. "I won't go easy on you just because you're my daughter."

"Whatever we had ended the day you conned that old estate out of me."

Maeve's voice stayed light. "So why are you actually here?"

Luka stopped pretending. "I want you to donate a kidney to Ansel."

When it came to kicking someone while they were down, Luka never hesitated—even when the person was his own blood.

Maeve's smile turned cold. "Try not to repeat that ridiculous demand too many times. It makes you sound stupid."

Luka leaned in, laying out the threat like a contract.

"You're barely in your twenties. With a homicide charge hanging over you, your future is over."

"If you agree to donate, I'll pull you out of here—whole and untouched."

He opened his briefcase and produced a document he'd clearly prepared in advance, smiling like a man offering candy.

"Sign at the bottom, and I will get you out of here."

Maeve took it, skimmed it, and snorted. "An organ donation agreement. Unpaid."

"One kidney," Luka said smoothly, "in exchange for decades of freedom. That's a bargain."

Maeve looked up. "And have you considered that even if Ansel survives surgery, he's still going to prison for the things he's done?"

"If the charge sticks, best case you go to prison. Worst case, you pay with your life."

"I'm offering you a way to live. You should be grateful instead of mouthing off."

Maeve's eyes sharpened. "A way to live? Or a way for you to personally drag me into hell?"

"Don't act like I can't see what you're doing."

Luka's face turned vicious. "My patience has limits. Keep refusing, and I'll stop being polite."

He pointed at her head. "This room is soundproofed. No cameras. No recording."

"If an officer has to use… special methods, it's because the suspect wouldn't cooperate."
