Griffin had promised to return in two days, but he was nowhere to be found.
This shattered the hopes of both Andres and Maeve, who had been desperately waiting for an explanation.
"I knew this would happen. You're so naive! The man was right in front of you, and you didn't think to detain him?"
Driving toward the family estate, Maeve couldn't help but criticize Andres for his lack of foresight.
Andres looked deeply wronged.
"Think about who you're talking about. Detain him? Do you honestly think I have the skills for that?"
His exceptional martial arts prowess had been personally taught to him by Griffin.
"Besides, he was very clear when he left. He said he would be gone for exactly two days. How was I supposed to know he'd break his word?"
Griffin was technically his Master, but Andres knew very little about the man.
Maeve let out a heavy scoff.
"You actually believed that old bastard?"
This wasn't the first time Andres had heard Maeve refer to Griffin as an old bastard.
Given his Master's youthful appearance, Andres was completely baffled by the insult.
"My Master—and your adoptive father—doesn't look a day over thirty."
"Calling him an old bastard every time you open your mouth seems a bit inappropriate, doesn't it?"
A teasing smirk touched Maeve's lips.
"How old do you think he is?"
Andres answered with total confidence, "Thirty-five, at most."
Maeve muttered softly, "Three hundred and fifty might be understating it."
Not only was Andres stunned, but Murray at the wheel and Hans in the passenger seat were also profoundly shocked by that answer.
How could anyone live to that age and not drop dead?
Even if he somehow survived, maintaining such a youthful appearance defied all laws of science.
With things out in the open, Maeve didn't mind giving them a brief explanation.
"I don't have all the details about his actual age."
"What I do know for sure is that he wasn't born in our era."
"As for the exact number, I'm a bit hazy on the specifics."
"So, back then, Master foresaw your bizarre destiny and took you in as his adoptive daughter to protect you?"
Maeve thought for a moment and nodded.
"That's a fair way to put it."
"According to him, if he hadn't taken me in, there would have been an endless string of disasters."
"As hard as it was to sever that bond, my mother had to make the agonizing choice to let me go so I could survive."
Andres suddenly asked, "When would be a good time for me to pay my respects to our mom?"
Maeve pointed out the car window.
"We're arriving at the estate. You'll see your mom in a minute."
Andres gently grasped Maeve's wrist. "I meant, I want to meet your mother."
Maeve offered an ambiguous reply.
"I suppose that time is coming soon."
New Year's Day was imminent, and tomorrow would mark the start of a fresh year.
