Ayla used to be Troy’s “wife”. As Troy’s friend, it was already wrong for him to fall for her. So he would never admit anything. If he didn’t say it out loud, then it wasn’t real.
Because Kaleb disliked him so much, Max had decided to invest just to win him over. In other words, he wanted to buy the future brother-in-law’s approval.
But he never expected Kaleb to be this stubborn.
That made everything harder.
Ayla said, “I’ll ask him about it later. But you don’t need to invest anymore.”
Max narrowed his eyes as he looked at her. She looked so much better than the last time he saw her.
Back when she was stuck in that awful marriage with Troy, she looked tired and drained. But now she seemed brighter. Even her spirit felt different.
Max used to like the way she looked at Troy with those clear, bright eyes. Now she was the one shining.
Every time Max saw her, he liked her even more. If he didn’t have good self-control, his feelings would’ve spilled out long ago.
Whe
He had never liked any woman before. Ayla was the first. And he had never liked anyone this much.
But now wasn’t the right time to tell her.
Max went silent for a few seconds, holding down the feelings rising in his chest. Then he breathed out and asked with a faint smile, “Is this because of Troy?”
Ayla didn’t deny it.
Max nodded. “Makes sense. I never did anything to you, but your attitude changed so fast. The reason has to be Troy … So, can you tell me what happened between you two?”
Ayla planned to make things clear with everyone sooner or later. Otherwise, all these powerful men might think she was playing hard to get.

“I don’t feel anything for him anymore,” she said. “I’ve drawn a hard line between us. I’m not attached to the past three years at all. That’s why, even if you and I don’t have a real conflict, I don’t want to get close to you. Because any tiny connection to Troy makes me feel … *
She paused, then spoke harder, “Disgusted.”
Ayla’s change in mindset changed everything about her. Before, when she tried to leave the marriage, it seemed like she was choosing it. But she had actually been forced into it. Now she truly saw the past for what it was. Troy was not someone worth her love. She walked away on her own terms, and she chose a future where Troy had no place at all.
Max felt a small spark of happiness. “Congrats. You finally stepped out of the shadow.”
Ayla was about to get up and leave, but then something felt off.
“Max.”
Max looked at her.
“Aren’t you Troy’s friend? Because what you’re saying right now doesn’t sound like something a friend would say.” She frowned. “And investing in Kaleb? That’s basically going against Troy.”
Max’s explanation about the investment made sense, and Ayla accepted it earlier.
But she had missed one thing-Max was Troy’s close friend.
It would be like her turning against Halle for no reason. That would never happen.
Max was always smooth with his words, but right now, he was silent.
Ayla didn’t rush him. She just took another slow sip of her coffee.
If he didn’t want to talk, she wouldn’t push him.
His thoughts wouldn’t change her decision to reject his investment anyway.
Still, something about him felt off.
Max stared out the window.
He was a direct man. If he liked someone, he went for it. He had never imagined there would be a day when he couldn’t say what he felt.
Ayla’s break from Troy was absolute. And Max stood on Troy’s side-for now. If he confessed now, Ayla would cut him off forever.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
