Max could feel it. Ayla had zero interest in men right now. That was why he had to work harder.
Trying to win over Kaleb was one of his efforts. But he didn’t expect to get rejected so badly.
Ayla waited a moment. When she saw that Max didn’t plan to speak, she said, “If you don’t want to talk, then forget I asked.”
This was between Max and Troy anyway.
It had nothing to do with her. She was about to stand up and leave when …
“Ayla,” Max suddenly said.
Ayla looked at him and waited.
“You and Troy were married for three years. We didn’t talk much, but I knew your marriage was a mess.”
“I know,” she said. “Troy let you guys make jokes about me.”
“That’s why I always knew he was trash.”
It was rare for Ayla to hear something honest from someone close to Troy. She let out a mocking laugh. “You might be the only normal friend he has.”
Max clicked his tongue and smirked. “I hated watching it. But I was only his friend. I didn’t have the right to say anything. And you and I weren’t close, so I wouldn’t bring it up.”
“I get that,” Ayla said.
Max smiled. “As for you saying I invested in Zane to go against Troy… you’re right. A friend shouldn’t do that. But it’s the truth. I admit it.” 2
He paused, then added, “But it depends on the situation. Like when I like a book. Even if the author is a terrible person, I can still like the book. The author and the work can stay separate.
“So, my wanting to invest in Kaleb’s company is my own choice. It has nothing to do with Troy being my friend or not.
“Does that make sense to you?”

Max really could talk. Everything he said sounded logical, leaving Ayla with nothing to argue
about.
But that tiny, weird feeling in her chest still wouldn’t go away.
“You still don’t understand?” Max asked.
“I don’t know how to explain it,” she said.
Max narrowed his eyes. “Or do you want to link everything I do back to Troy? Like, I’m just doing this to annoy him?”
Ayla shook her head. “No.”
Max might oppose Troy, yes, but he would need a reason.
People didn’t do strange things without a motive.
Besides, with how close he was to Troy, if Max was really angry, he’d probably just punch Troy instead of jumping through all these hoops.
When Ayla thought that, the odd feeling in her heart faded.
She really didn’t know Max very well. So if he acted weird, it wasn’t that surprising.
“You’re busy. I’ll head out,” she said calmly, then turned and left.
Max watched her leave. Even after the door closed, he kept staring at it.
His hand, which had been resting loosely at his side, slowly curled.
A moment ago, he had hoped-just a little-that Ayla would realize he liked her. That was why he said what he said.
He wanted to see her reaction.
But she never made that connection.
So he never got to see what he was hoping for.
Max felt his heart twist. He told himself not to rush. If he rushed, things would break.
A few minutes later, Patrick walked back in.
He glanced at Max and saw nothing unusual on his face. So he spoke his mind. “Mr. Bennett,

they actually turned us down. The development cost for that game is around a billion dollars. And they’re a startup. Without our investment, who’s going to put in that much money?”
Max asked, “Do you still plan to talk to Kaleb?”
If he became partners with Kaleb, he would have reasons to see Ayla often.
She wouldn’t see him as part of Troy’s circle anymore, but as a major shareholder of Kaleb’s company. Her attitude toward him would definitely change.
Then asking her out for dinner would even make sense.
You needed contact to grow feelings.
Max didn’t want to give up.
Patrick shook his head. “Kaleb makes the big decisions. If he says no, then there’s nothing I can do.”
Max lowered his eyes. “If you were Emmett, would you say no to a pile of money?”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
