Draven said flatly, “No.”

The yacht drifted gently on the open sea, still unsteady. It was nearly past midnight. Everyone. had already shrugged off the earlier scare. The hallway outside the lounge buzzed with chatter, making the quiet inside feel even heavier.
Draven had no plans to go out. Ayla had to stay with him, sorting through everything she’d seen in Aqualith tonight. Then, a thought she’d missed earlier hit her.
When Draven said “not impossible”, he’d been replying to Luke’s “unless she’s wife”.
Ayla sensed something unspoken lurking in that answer.
Draven did protect her a lot.

Head down and lost in thought, Ayla didn’t notice the slow flush creeping across Draven’s face. By the time she did, he’d already grabbed her wrist and leaned in close.
She froze. Luckily, the back of the couch was right behind her, so she didn’t tumble onto the cushions. If she had, she’d have been trapped and embarrassed to death.
They were way too close.
“Mr. Storm, did someone drug you?”
Draven let out a low, rough grunt.
It was probably that drink from Shawn. The party was chaotic. Who even knew if it had been spiked? Tracking it would be impossible,
“I’ll find you an antidote.”
“No. I can handle it.” Draven’s voice was already deep. Now, strained through the pain, it dropped even lower, rougher. Not his usual calm tone-there was something darkly tempting
in it.
Ayla tried to push him away, but he held her wrist tighter, eyes dark as night. “Ayla.”
He muttered, “Don’t move.”

Ayla ignored how wrong it felt. “Mr. Storm, I’ll stay here, but this is torture for you. I really should go.”
“Do I disgust you?” Draven’s other side surfaced. His stare was razor-sharp. If she said worried he might snap right there. Her heart leaped. “No.”
“Then why leave?”
“… We’re crossing the line between boss and secretary.”
His eyes darkened. “Are you scared I’ll try something?”
Ayla stiffened. For a moment, she thought he might.

If he did, she’d grab anything nearby and fight back. But she’d spent enough time with Draven to know he wasn’t that kind of man.
“Mr. Storm, harassment happens all the time. I’ve been lucky. Our company rules are strict, and women’s rights are protected.
“After working with you, I trust you. You’re only acting this close because of the drug. If your goal was real, instinct wouldn’t matter. You’d just force it, not ask me to stay.
“And you’re a man who isn’t interested in women, so I’m not afraid. But can you handle being this close? When you sober up, your OCD will hate this.”
After a tense pause, Draven fought his body and leaned back.
Ayla gave a small smile. “I knew I wasn’t wrong about you. You’re rational,”
He clenched his jaw, then suddenly grabbed her jaw from the side of her neck. His thumb brushed over the spot where Troy had left a hickey, moving slowly back and forth.
His eyes narrowed, hiding his thoughts, cold and focused. “Ayla…”
Then, midnight hit.
Her phone alarm screamed.
They both glanced at it. The screen read, “Happy third wedding anniversary.”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
