Ayla almost laughed. “Yeah, three years. But I also collected three years of disappointment. Get it? It didn’t disappear overnight. I just finally saw you for who you are. You’re not worth it, and I’m done lowering myself. Life will be better without you.”

A week ago, losing control in her old guest room had filled him with rage. He was angry at himself. He’d stormed out and drunk with Skyla, slowly cooling down as he slipped back into old habits.
