Chapter 155 Why Did You Save Me?

Troy could see the redness in Ayla’s eyes. She clearly hadn’t slept well.

It wasn’t just him who’d been up all night. That thought gave him a strange sense of comfort. But he also saw some determination in her gaze, a kind of cold resolve.

Ayla didn’t flinch when he leaned closer. She didn’t care why he suddenly moved toward her. Her face stayed blank, calm, and unreadable.

Troy studied her. Ayla studied him too. After today, she wouldn’t have another chance to look closely at the man she once loved.

She wanted to remember this face so she could avoid him in her next life.

After a few seconds, she finally asked, “Done staring?”

Troy pulled his eyes away and looked forward. He didn’t say another word.

Ayla hit the gas, and the car shot forward.

Troy had sat in her car before. She always drove smooth and steady, the kind of driving that made people feel safe. You’d never guess she could get into an accident.

But today? She drove fast and impulsively, sliding into every tiny gap on the road.

Troy’s expression darkened. “Hey, slow down!”

Ayla didn’t listen at all.

His glare hit her profile hard, but then something about her movements caught him. Back at the airport, when she forced a stop on him, she had already shown unbelievable control over a car.

Someone who could drive like this probably didn’t have a soft personality. Not at all. She had edges. Sharp

ones.

Troy froze for a second. He never expected that on the day of their divorce, he would finally see the real Ayla-strong, fierce, and nothing like the gentle version she showed him.

She had only been soft with him.

“When did you learn to drive?”

Ayla replied, “After I turned 18.”

“You drive well. Why didn’t you tell me?”

Ayla almost laughed at the irony. She turned, giving him a cold, unbelieving look, as if asking, “How could

that?”

She eased her speed then. The car steadied, becoming smooth again, just like before. Then she said,

“You’re seriously asking me that? You knew how I felt about you. If you had ever shown even a little interest in me, do you think I wouldn’t have told you when I learned to drive or how good I got at it?”

Troy heard the bitterness in her voice.

It shut him up instantly.

Because she was right. He never noticed the small things. He never cared enough to ask. Even if he saw something, it never stayed long in his mind. He was always distant. Always cold.

Troy had nothing left to say.

No matter what he said now, she would only throw it back at him. And he deserved it. What else can he talk about?

But then, after a quiet moment, Ayla spoke first. “Troy, I’ve always wanted to ask you something.”

Troy didn’t even realize how quickly he answered. “What is it?”

“Why did you save me back then?”

Ayla thought back to three years ago. Her mom had disappeared by the ocean. Deep down, Ayla always believed her mom wasn’t gone, but she knew that was only a lie she told herself. The truth was too painful to face. So she kept going back to the beach. After a few visits, she slipped and fell into the water.

Ayla could swim. She wasn’t going to drown right away. She floated in the waves, drifting farther out. Soon her strength faded. She didn’t even know if she was trying to end everything or just trying to punish herself.

But when the real panic hit-the sharp, burning pain of not being able to breathe-Ayla realized she wanted to live. She wanted it badly. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the strength to fight anymore.

Right then, a hand slid under her back. Strong. Steady. Troy’s arm wrapped around her and pulled her toward the cruise boat. She blacked out in his hold. He didn’t panic. He pressed on her chest. He gave her CPR.

And when she finally opened her eyes, she saw Troy leaning over her. Water dripping down his pale, sharp face. What shocked her more was the delight in his eyes.

He whispered, “You’re finally awake.”

In that moment, Ayla realized something she had never expected: someone in this world wanted her to live. And that someone was Troy.

He took her to the hospital. He paid the bills, and he didn’t leave until the doctor said she was safe.
