Ayla washed up and lay in bed. She couldn’t sleep, so she turned on the bedroom TV and clicked on a random movic.
The Shawshank Redemption.
She had watched it with Troy once.
The next morning was Monday.
Troy went to work like nothing had happened. Laura took the day off, so no one made breakfast. Ayla used to make it for him every morning without fail. On a day like this, having no breakfast waiting almost felt like a joke.
Still, Troy never missed a meal. He left for the office with his usual cold face.
Everything moved as normal-meetings, reports from executives, signing piles of documents. After lunch, there wasn’t much left for him to do. Technically, he could leave. But he didn’t.
Jed noticed something was off. “Mr. Winston, are you planning to stay here all afternoon?”
Normally, Troy would be meeting a business partner for an afternoon business chat.
“I have something to do,” Troy said.
“Do you need me to go with you?” Jed asked.
“No. Get out,” Troy replied, his voice sharp and icy.
Jed instantly sensed that something with Troy’s mood was wrong, but his face gave nothing away. Since Troy wasn’t saying more, Jed didn’t ask.
Whatever it was, it had to be important. The only thing that ever affected his boss was matters involving Skyla. He had even bought her a house yesterday. Maybe the two of them were getting married soon.
But today, Troy was going to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. Only Ayla and Max knew. Everyone else had no idea.
Their marriage had always been kept quiet, and so was the divorce. No need to make an announcement.
Normally, he would tell Jed, but Troy didn’t feel like it.
At 1:50 p.m.
Ten minutes before their agreed-upon time.
Troy still hadn’t received a single message from Ayla.

Would she show up?
Would she pick him up?
When the clock struck two, his phone buzzed. His heart skipped.
He stared at the caller ID-Ayla.
Five seconds later, he answered.
“Troy, I’m waiting for you at the B2 parking lot.”
Troy hung up and left his office without a second of hesitation.
Jed caught a glimpse of his expression, dark enough to scare anyone.

He wanted to ask what happened, but he didn’t dare. Everyone in the secretary department froze like mice sensing a storm.
“Jed, what’s wrong with the boss?” Blake whispered.
“No idea,” Jed replied.
“Should we check on him?”
Jed remembered Troy’s earlier warning. “No. He has personal matters to deal with.”
With how terrible Troy looked, it was hard not to assume Ayla had caused it again. Two days ago, Troy even went to Aqualith for her sake. He didn’t explain what happened, but Jed knew it had to be about Ayla.
Jed always looks down on Ayla. Her problems weren’t his concern. If Troy didn’t bring her up, Jed wouldn’t
ask.
He found Ayla annoying and foolish, and he couldn’t stand her. He only hoped Skyla would replace her soon. And now that Troy had bought Skyla a house, it felt like that it would happen soon.
What Jed didn’t know was that Troy had left the office with a grim face. By the time he reached the parking garage, his face was calm again-blank, unreadable.
He walked toward the spot Ayla had told him. Even from a distance, he saw her SUV.
Her new car-something he had only noticed yesterday. It was cheap. So cheap he wouldn’t even look at it
twice.
Ayla saw him. She lowered her window, gave him a cold look, then drove forward until she stopped right
in front of him.
“Get in.”
Her tone was just as cold as it had been on the phone.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
