Divorce really was a good thing.

At the same time, Ayla still found it unbelievable. She divorced Troy and wanted nothing to do with his family, but somehow she ended up holding on to Draven for support.
Maybe it was because, in the whole family, aside from Martin, Draven didn’t care about anyone at all.
That was the only reason she could work with him.
If Draven had taken the Winstons’ side, she would’ve backed away without thinking and probably quit early.
Because he didn’t, she had dared to ask him for help before.
Life works in strange ways.
The Bentley pulled into a pharmacy parking lot.
Draven got out. Ayla followed behind his tall figure as they walked inside.
Ayla immediately stepped forward and explained the situation to the doctor. She asked him to treat Draven’s wounds.
She took the lead, quick and professional, like a perfect assistant.
Draven stayed calm as he walked over.
The doctor disinfected his hand with iodine. Draven’s presence was so intense that the doctor’s hand shook. He pressed down too hard on Draven’s injured knuckle.
Ayla spoke up instantly. “Please be a little gentler.”
The doctor had already been nervous from pressing too hard, and her reminder only made him more careful.
Draven, however, was thinking Ayla had once treated Troy with this same gentle care.
A wave of dark emotions twisted in Draven’s chest, heavy and tight.
But he forced it all down, cold and sharp, until nothing showed on his face.
Ayla didn’t notice a thing.
The doctor had pressed too hard, and Draven had to be in pain. But he didn’t even twitch; he didn’t move an eyebrow. Who could possibly guess what was going on inside him?
Maybe Ayla was just used to him. That was why she didn’t feel scared around him anymore, and why

When the wound was cleaned and bandaged, Ayla stepped up to pay. It only cost a few dollars. Draven couldn’t bring himself to argue with her over something that small.
Then he drove her back to the courthouse, where her car was parked.
“I’ll bring your gift later,” Draven said, giving her a look from head to toe.
Ayla’s emotions had stayed steady this whole time.
The divorce didn’t seem to affect her at all.
Maybe she only looked calm in front of him. Maybe she still had feelings she wanted to handle on her
Own.
Either way, Draven didn’t need to keep her here.
It was the start. He couldn’t push too hard, or she’d notice something and pull away.
As soon as Ayla stepped out of the car, Draven drove off before she could speak.
In the rearview mirror, he saw it. Ayla let out a breath of relief.
Being around him put her on edge.
She seemed more comfortable when he was cold and distant.
Draven pressed his lips together and hit the gas harder.
When the Bentley disappeared, Ayla finally turned and climbed into her car.
She unlocked her phone.
Ayla had posted the divorce announcement on Instagram. Calls and messages were pouring in.
Many people congratulated her; a few said nothing at all.
Ayla didn’t have an opportunity to answer anyone yet.
Ayla was scrolling through her phone when a message from Max popped up. “Ayla, congrats.”
Ayla thought of last night. “I didn’t see the message you sent me last night.”
Max replied, “Good thing you didn’t.”
“Huh?”
Max explained, “I sent it to the wrong person.”
Ayla replied, “Only congratulating me? Aren’t you going to congratulate Troy too? He finally got rid of me.”

Max answered, “Don’t worry. I’ll take him out for a drink and celebrate his freedom from the misery of marriage.”
Ayla almost laughed. Max finally dropped his pretense.
Not long ago he said Troy was a jerk as a married man. Now, he was calling it escaping misery.
Sure enough, birds of a feather. All that polite talk Max showed her before was only because of Troy.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
