Even though Ayla felt Max was talking a bit too much, she had to admit this: he really did think from her point of view. He was honest, and he cared about her feelings.
Max even noticed tiny details she herself had overlooked.
What woman wouldn’t feel a little moved by that?
But Ayla was only analyzing Max based on how popular he was with women. She had zero interest in him.
And she wasn’t going to judge him just because he was close to Troy. After all, he was also James’s cousin.
If Max avoided James just to spare her feelings, she’d get blamed for no reason. She didn’t want to be dragged into their family stuff.
Ayla texted, “That’s between you and your cousin. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Max replied, “I’m still worried I’ll make you lose your appetite if you see me.”
Ayla guaranteed, “I don’t care about that.”
Max said, “Good. The last thing I want is for you to find me annoying.”
Ayla stared at her phone, speechless.
She had only turned down his investment for Kaleb, and somehow he made it sound like a lifetime feud. She couldn’t tell if Max was overly sensitive or just too considerate.
Ayla didn’t plan to reply again.
Just as she was about to start her car, someone knocked on the window.
Ayla turned and saw Max standing outside with a bouquet in his hands.
He looked perfect as always. Stylish clothes, a charming face, and sunlight hitting his fair skin just right. The bright flowers reflected their colors across his features. His seductive hunter eyes could make any woman melt.
Ayla was shocked.
One second he was texting her.
The next second, he was right there.
She stared at him, stunned.
Max knocked again. Ayla lowered the window.
“Why are you here?”

Max smiled lightly. He had come to get firsthand news about Ayla and Troy’s divorce. If things didn’t go smoothly, he planned to stir things up.
But none of that showed on his face. Instead, he lied smoothly, “I came to pick up Troy, but he’s nowhere to be found.”
Ayla remained muted.
Max blinked. “What, you get upset every time I say his name? You hate him that much?”
Ayla nodded.
“Alright, I won’t bring him up.” Max thought, Good. At least you’re not still in love with Troy.
He lifted the flowers and said with a grin, “These are for you. Happy divorce.”
Ayla couldn’t help but examine him. Max really was something.
He came to pick up Troy, then handed flowers to Troy’s ex-wife. Did he honestly think Troy liked getting flowers from another man? And there were roses mixed in, too. No wonder Troy sometimes complained about Max being an incubus. Max truly had a talent for charming people.
Ignoring his connection to Troy, Max was actually kind of fun.
As for the flowers, Ayla thought for a second.
“Alright. I’ll take them.”
Max raised his brows in surprise. “Really?”
“Why not? What’s wrong?”
“I thought you wouldn’t want them.”
Ayla said, “Normally I wouldn’t.”
Max understood instantly; he was an expert at reading people. Ayla was provoking him. “You’re doing it deliberately, right? If your ex-husband finds out you accepted my flowers, it’ll definitely upset him.”
He sighed dramatically, pretending to feel bad for Troy, but his hand was already pushing the roses toward
her.
Ayla took the bouquet, looked at the flowers first, then lifted her eyes to Max. Her cool, calm gaze didn’t show a single emotion. “So, are you going to tell Troy?”
“Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I? You know I love watching Troy make a fool of himself.”
Max didn’t care about his brother’s feelings at all. Right now, all he could see was Ayla.
After the divorce, Ayla looked bright and alive again, like she’d been given a new life. That was exactly the
version of her Max liked.

“Then I guess accepting the flowers was the right move,” Ayla said. She thanked him lightly. “I’m heading
out.”
Max wanted to ask her to take him with her, but he couldn’t say that.
He stepped aside, and from where she couldn’t see him, his deep gaze clung to her face.
Max noticed her pause at the door and glance back at the courthouse.
Max’s eyes darkened right away. What is she thinking?
Is she thinking about Troy?
Max didn’t know what was in her head, but he was sure of one thing. The next time Ayla came here, she’d be walking in with him to get a marriage certificate from the city hall next door.
Max had always loved freedom. He was easygoing with people, mostly because he had never met anything -or anyone-he truly wanted. He simply didn’t care about much.
This was the first time in his life he wanted something this badly.
That made it special.
Ayla pulled her gaze back with no trace of regret, stepped on the gas, and drove away.
She wasn’t coming back to this place ever again.
Ayla wasn’t sure if she’d ever date again, but even if she did, she would never give her whole heart again.
If she couldn’t love someone with everything she had, then there was no point in getting married. So she was ready to stay single for the rest of her life.
When Ayla made up her mind, she always followed through.
In her rearview mirror, Max was still standing there, waving at her.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
