They had officially gotten divorced. And right after that, Troy caught her at a bar with a male escort.
What a twisted kind of fate.
Ayla looked Troy up and down.
He had fought with Draven earlier. He clearly didn’t win anything from it. Now he had cleaned himself up, trying hard to look normal, but the mess still showed.
Troy rarely endured Ayla “looking him over,” so his face turned even darker. “What are you doing here? And who is he?”
Ayla laughed at him. “What else do people do besides drink in the bar? Did you want everyone to know your ex-wife is so broke she has to work here just to afford food?”
Troy snapped, “Don’t change the subject.”
He shot Casey a cold, sharp glare.
Casey instantly froze. When Max looked at him with annoyance back in the private lounge, it felt more like teasing. Even if Max wasn’t thrilled with him, Casey knew Max wouldn’t actually hurt him.
But this man? Casey was truly scared.
Troy’s eyes were too dark, too dangerous, like he might leap forward and bite him at any second.
Casey was over six feet tall, a grown man, yet a single look from Troy sent fear crawling up his spine. Meanwhile, Ayla didn’t flinch at all.
No wonder he couldn’t charm her.
The difference in level was right there in front of him.
Ayla said calmly, “I don’t owe you an explanation about who he is.”
Knowing exactly what Troy was about to say, she helped him finish. “Let me guess-just because I’m standing next to a man, you think there’s something going on?”
“‘re really that eager to imagine someone’s cheating on you, huh?”
Her expression twisted with disgust.
Then she corrected herself.
“Wait. My mistake. We’re divorced. Even did cheat, it has nothing to do with you.”
Her smile faded. “Move.”
The moment he heard the word “cheating,” Troy snapped. His expression turned eerie and vicious. He blocked her path. “Ayla, who gave you the nerve to talk to me like this?!”

Ayla wasn’t used to seeing Troy lose control like this.

In the past, he was always the cold, distant one. She was the one who used to tiptoe around him, afraid he’d be upset.
But now? She actually enjoyed watching him unravel.
Looking calmly at his furious face brought her an unexpected sense of peace. She glanced over him again and added, “You’re acting so worked up, it almost makes me think you didn’t want this divorce. Like I’m the one who dumped you.”
Troy was an arrogant man—so arrogant he demanded she love him unconditionally for life. Of course he couldn’t stand her change.
He was losing control, yes, but Ayla knew this wasn’t love. He just couldn’t accept that she no longer cared.
She wasn’t going to feed his ego anymore. “You look like a clown,” she said.
Troy nearly lost it.
He held onto what little control he had left. Even furious, he kept his face set in that same cold, gloomy expression.
“How did I never notice you were this sharp-tongued before? This good at throwing insults?”
Ayla heard the way he ground his teeth. It made her laugh for real. “You really can’t figure it out?”
She chuckled and stepped a little closer, smiling in a way that was sweet on the surface and pure sarcasm underneath. “That’s the difference between loving someone and not loving someone. You used to be a star in my sky.”
Then her voice turned icy, not masking her disgust. “But now? You’re trash. And I don’t owe trash a pleasant expression.”
Ayla was not the type to attack people for no reason. It was Troy’s fault for messing with her.
He had already pushed her past her limit at the courthouse, and now he was doing it again.
She wasn’t going to be polite anymore.
Just minutes earlier, Ayla had been enjoying Casey’s service-being cared for, admired, and spoiled. It felt so good she could hardly stop herself from getting used to it.
Right now, snapping back at Troy felt just as satisfying. There was no need to act classy. She had given up
on that.
Besides, she had Draven to back her.
Ayla had already broken the chains in her mind.
Draven had promised that she could use him, and the price he asked was something she could afford.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
