Ayla froze. “What happened?”

Kaleb’s voice came through the line. “Just felt like seeing you.”

Ayla blinked. “Is it the end of the world? It’s not like you to care for someone.”

Kaleb’s tone sharpened. “You’re mushy. I’m leaving.”

Ayla said quickly, “Alright, alright, I’ll stop. Wait for me at Al. I’ll drive over and pick you up.”

Her coworker Sacha looked up, surprised at how fast Ayla was packing. “Well, someone’s in a hurry. Got a date tonight?”

Sacha didn’t know about her marriage.

Ayla smiled. “No, it’s just my brother. He doesn’t drop by often.”

Sacha grinned. “Then you better go.”

After Ayla left, Will came to look for her.

Sacha said, “Mr. Newton, you showed up a little late. Ayla already headed out. Is it about work? I can take care of it.”

“My God, she’s fast.”

Ayla’s car was still at the bar, and Draven planned to drive her there so she could pick it up. Will only came to call her after that.

Sacha kept her answers simple because she did not share Ayla’s private business. “She had something planned tonight.”

Will said, “Alright. I understand,”

Will then shared the news with Draven. “Mr. Storm, Ayla had a date. She already left.”

Since they knew each other well, Will added, “Ayla seemed a lot happier after her divorce. She used to stay by herself. Now she went out all the time. I’m happy for her.”

Draven stayed silent.

Draven looked at him. His eyes carried a heavy pressure that made Will’s stomach tighten.

Draven seemed upset.

Will took a second look. Draven gave no reaction.

Kaleb owned a start-up. Long hours meant nothing to him. He worked late every night. He never took a day off in a full week. Maybe he loved his work. Maybe he was young and his body could handle it. He did not look tired. He carried the sharp energy of someone driven.

Ayla drove toward him. She saw him from far away. He stood out in the crowd like a lone tower.

She always felt annoyed when she looked at him. Yet when he stood among strangers, the contrast hit her. It was not only his looks and presence. His energy was the thing that pulled her in. He looked alive. He looked bright.

Ayla pulled up in front of him and lowered the window. “Get in.”

Kaleb walked around the front of the car without speaking. He tried the back seat. The door refused to give. A tense moment of silence followed as he realized the lock held the door shut. He accepted it and got into the passenger seat.

Ayla glanced at him. She relaxed once she confirmed he looked steady. She focused on the road. “So what brings you all the way out here to find me?”

Kaleb had overheard her talk with Juliet earlier. He failed to control his eyes. Emotion pushed through him and his eyes let out tears.

Kaleb felt embarrassed because his eyes had betrayed him, and the sting of it pushed him to walk off

without a word.

He went back to his company and locked himself in his office. He lit a cigarette and took a slow drag.
