Chapter 38 I Will Compliment You Every Day
It was no use trying to please everyone. Forget it
Ayla returned to the car and sat quietly for ten minutes.
The intense emotions had already been extinguished by her aunt; there was nothing left to feel painful about.
During those ten minutes, past events played like a movie in her mind.
Suddenly, Ayla made a decision.
She built a high wall in her heart, refusing to show any vulnerability to anyone.
She would no longer hold expectations of anyone, because expectations only led to disappointment and pain.
Ayla could not change others or prevent them from causing harm.
However, she could choose to protect herself.
She was the only one she could rely on.
She pressed the accelerator and took control of the steering wheel. Ayla started the car and did not head home. She drove straight to Central Mall.
Saturday’s business banquet awaited.
Ayla did not have a formal gown.
She belatedly realized that in the past three years, she had never attended a banquet with Troy, so she had no gowns at all.
Previously, she had not cared about dressing up because her life had no focus on herself.
Now, everything had changed.
Ayla walked into a gown store and chose a simple black dress with silver trim. She was about to ask the sales assistant for help, but the staff were gathered, chatting.
“The CEO of Winston Group and his wife just picked the most expensive haute couture gown here, nearly ten million. They didn’t even blink before swiping the card. Afterward, they went next door for jewelry. The whole set probably costs tens of millions.”

“I wish I were that rich just once!”

“Being rich is just one advantage. Did you see? Every time Mrs. Winston tried on a dress, Mr. Winston examined it carefully and gave his opinion!”
“Exactly! It’s these little details that annoy me. My boyfriend sits on the couch playing on his phone while I try on clothes. Every piece, he says, looks good. He shows his disinterest so blatantly that it’s infuriating!”
“But are you sure you recognized them correctly?”
“Of course. My boyfriend works at Winston Group. The CEO personally led his wife to a high-level meeting. He was clearly giving the spotlight to his wife!”
“That’s way too indulgent!”
“Absolutely. My boyfriend said other CEOs have mistresses, but Mr. Winston has remained faithful, with no scandals.”
“Wow, so devoted. Not just emotionally, but physically devoted to his wife. He’s a very responsible man.”
“Honestly, loyalty is rare in this fickle society. Even if Troy didn’t have his current position, he would still be sought after!”
“True! I really envy Mrs. Winston!”
The sales assistants were chatting happily when they finally noticed Ayla.
They quickly approached to help. “Hello, Miss. Would you like to try this gown?”
Ayla lowered the dress. “No, thank you.”
She moved to another store and picked a simple pure white gown.
The front was modest, but the back was very low-cut, mid-length. Most people could not pull off this dress.
Ayla had a striking appearance and a cool aura. The white dress did not make her look plain; it complemented her presence, giving her a subtle sharpness.
The assistant helped tie half of Ayla’s long black hair, exposing her bare back.
Her fair skin contrasted sharply with her dark hair. Under the lights, Ayla seemed to glow.
The assistant was stunned. “So elegant, so beautiful, and so… so… ”

Ayla raised an eyebrow. “So what?”
“So cool.”
“Cool?”
The assistant nodded vigorously. “You’re giving out a very reliable feeling.”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
