Max continued. “If it’s the first one, then you just hate that Draven took something that belonged to you. You’re no different from when you were a kid. As for the second one…” He gave a nasty little grin. “Have you ever considered that you actually like Ayla?”

Troy didn’t react much. “I like her? Sure. I enjoyed the days when she took care of me. I liked

that.”

Max said, “Stop being stubborn. You have feelings for Ayla. Otherwise, why can’t you let go?”

Troy’s gaze turned dark and mocking. “Have feelings for her? I don’t know. All I know is I can’t accept that she dared to dump me!”

He refused to admit it, but Max didn’t think his judgment was wrong and kept probing. “On your birthday-she really didn’t show up?”

He knew Ayla wouldn’t go back to an ex, so he’d spent the whole day expecting her to show up

and cause a scene.

Max had feelings for Ayla, but they’d spent far too little time together. The only version of her he could recall was Ayla when she was still married to Troy. He wanted to see another side of

her.

Max was into Ayla, but he felt like he could only watch from the sidelines, and he’d never get a real shot. That also made him lose confidence in pursuing her. They hadn’t been through anything together. Liking her was all talk, nothing worth much.

Troy gritted his teeth. “She came.”

Max narrowed his eyes slightly. “She must’ve done something that really set you off, for you to stop contacting me these past few days.”

Troy’s breathing grew heavier. “She announced our divorce in front of the Winstons.”

Max almost laughed. “After that, you really shouldn’t have chased her all the way here.”

Troy’s eyes were icy cold. “What do you mean?”

“Ayla had plenty of chances to call Martin and tell him about the divorce. She didn’t. She deliberately waited until the day the Winstons were all present to announce it. Haven’t you figured it out yet? Ayla left no room for retreat for either of you. She did it that decisively. And

He couldn’t give up Ayla. That was the strongest voice in his heart.

Even now, Troy still hadn’t processed the fact that Ayla had abandoned him. It felt like he had to be dreaming. He’d go find Ayla and demand answers.

Max tried to talk him down. “Draven isn’t the kid he used to be.”

Troy’s expression turned icy. “Whose side are you on?”

“Yours, of course.”

Max had originally planned to wait for Troy and Draven to fight it out and reap the benefits himself, but circumstances changed, and so did his mindset. He lost the will to compete and dropped that thought.

Troy was covered in injuries, his emotions still unstable. Seeing him clutch his stomach as his old problems flared up again, Max was even less inclined to go after Ayla.

Troy was his best friend. He couldn’t just watch him sink deeper.

Max admitted he was being hypocritical. If he could’ve taken Ayla for himself, he wouldn’t be saying any of this. If he could, Troy would already be fighting him, and Draven wouldn’t even be in the picture.

Max said, “Draven’s one month older than you, and he’s technically your big brother. But when he was a kid, he was skinnier than all of us. Tiny. Easy for you to bully. Do you remember the first time you met him? He gave you a little wooden sailboat. If I remember right, his hands were covered in cuts. He scraped them raw just to make that sailboat.
