Chapter 51 Skyla and Her Little Lies
ZeitTech had great benefits, and John liked the chill work environment.
Plus, Halle was gorgeous. Having a pretty boss walk past him every day was its own kind of perk, and he really didn’t want to leave.
“Ms. Kinsman, if it’s because I brought Skyla to the office without permission, I can-”
John’s voice cut off the second he met Halle’s cold stare.
Halle said, “Get out.”
John gritted his teeth, suddenly annoyed. What did I even do wrong?
In his mind, Halle only succeeded because she was a rich kid with money and connections. Otherwise, how could a woman outdo him in the workplace? What was she even so proud of?
But all those ugly thoughts stayed trapped in his head.
Louisa escorted him to HR.
Based on his time at the company, they gave him three months’ pay-around 50 or 60 grand. Only then did his anger ease a little.
But John was still pissed. On his way out, he sneered at Louisa. “This company’s probably going under. You should tell your Ms. Kinsman to cash in on her looks while she still can and marry some rich guy. Go home and pop out a bunch of kids.”
Louisa frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?
“Ms. Kinsman doesn’t know how to value talent. She’s short-sighted. She’s gonna fall hard sooner or later. I’m just giving her some life advice. What’s wrong with that?” John only dared to talk tough in front of the CEO’s secretary.
Louisa got it and called the security guards.
With one look from her, the guards grabbed John-hard.
John’s face went pale from the pain, screaming over and over.
In the same calm tone she’d use to tell an assistant to print a document, Louisa said, “Throw him out to the street. Make it loud.”
The guards stayed silent, focused on doing their job right.

Meanwhile, Skyla was riding the elevator down.
She came back empty-handed and was in a bad mood.
Halle wouldn’t cooperate, and if Skyla couldn’t solve the project’s core tech problem within a month, she’d be in serious trouble.
So she was already thinking about how to fix this mess.
But the moment she stepped out of the elevator her phone rang. It was Norris.
Skyla’s expression turned cold.
Had Halle been bad-mouthing her to Norris?
The truth was, she’d never even met Halle before and had no idea how she’d offended her.
But none of that mattered.
What mattered was the result. Halle didn’t give her any respect and embarrassed her. Skyla was furious, and now, there would be serious consequences!
Her phone kept buzzing.
Skyla calmed herself and answered, “Professor Payne, what’s up?”
Her tone sounded completely normal. She was good at hiding her emotions-that’s what strong people did.
“Skyla, you’re the star of the team! You just met with Ms. Kinsman, and she emailed me saying she’s willing to cooperate. And she only needs half a month-two weeks earlier than I expected.”
Skyla froze.
A second later, she replied, “I was just doing my job. I also want the project to move forward smoothly.”
“You’ve worked hard,” Norris said. “I talked to Ms Kinsman for a long time yesterday, and she flat-out refused-no room for negotiation at all. But you went, and everything changed. You definitely deserve the credit.
“I’ve told the whole project team. Everyone’s excited. Don’t rush back-have lunch first. Come back to the office this afternoon, we’ll celebrate together.”
Skyla said, “Okay, Professor Payne.”

After hanging up, she let out a long breath.
There was still a risk of the leak getting exposed, but by then, Halle probably wouldn’t be in the mood to care about something so minor…
Skyla asked Troy to grab lunch with her, then headed toward the café.
When she arrived just now, she told Rolf to wait for her.
Partly because she didn’t want Rolf to know she was just there to ask Halle for help, and partly because of her intuition.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
