Chapter 52 Financially Free
Westhaven had river-view apartments, and Ayla’s place was the penthouse.
Ayla said, “If you like it, just stay at my place.”
“Staying over sometimes is fine.” Halle took a sip of her wine.
Ayla was driving, so she didn’t drink.
Halle drank about half a glass, then she told Ayla everything from the moment she saw Skyla -her expression, what she said, and how she shut her down.
Halle said, “Skyla’s nose is so high in the air I’m amazed she hasn’t slammed into a wall. I’ve dealt with my share of pretentious people, but she’s easily one of the best. She and your ex- husband? Perfect match.”
Halle watched Ayla’s reaction.
She wasn’t sad or upset like last time at the racetrack. Ayla was pretty calm this time.

Feeling bold, Halle kept going. “I finally get why Troy treated you way. Maybe he’s just not into normal people.”
Ayla’s expression suddenly changed. “Troy…”
Halle thought she accidentally poked Ayla’s sore spot again and mentally scolded herself for bringing up that jerk and ruining the mood.
But the next second, Ayla said worriedly, “He might try to get back at you for Skyla!”
Halle’s first reaction wasn’t fear of getting into trouble with the Winston Group; she was shocked. “Troy would go that far for Skyla?”
Then she immediately felt like she’d put her foot in her mouth again.
Troy’s family had mistreated Ayla, but he never stood up for her; he had been one of the people who hurt her.
The comparison was devastating, and Ayla must have felt terrible hearing it.
Ayla nodded, completely convinced. “He would.
She wasn’t as upset as Halle imagined. Instead, she was already thinking of solutions.
She had an idea. “There’s a charity gala tomorrow night at the House of Myur. Try to get an
1/3
invitation and come find me there.”
She paused. “I’ll try to keep you around Draven for a while, so people think you two are close. If Troy tries anything, they’ll hesitate out of respect for Draven, and they’ll know you’re not an easy target. I’ll also give Will a heads-up.”
It meant using Draven.
She didn’t know if he’d be angry
But Ayla couldn’t worry about that. Halle stood up for her, and she just wanted to do something to help. She didn’t have the power to go against Troy, so she had to use Draven’s name. If he made her pay for it later, she’d deal with it.
Halle understood.
Troy might cause her to lose a few deals, but she’d probably get new ones because of Draven’s influence.
But …
“Last time we talked, you were trying hard to keep your distance from Draven. Now it sounds like you’re pretty close?” Halle looked curious.
Ayla replied, “You were out of town for the AI Summit on Monday, so I forgot to tell you. Draven is the mysterious CEO behind Storm Group. I’ll be attending this charity event with him, mainly to brief him on the backgrounds of the guests.”
Halle knew Ayla worked at Storm Group, but she’d only known Draven as a big shot from Zheron.
“Will didn’t tell me this!”
Ayla replied, “He’s making his official debut tomorrow.”
Halle got it. “Then you definitely need a gown for that kind of event. Did you pick one? Let me see what you’re wearing.”
Ayla was already gorgeous, and at 5’8″, she had a great figure. She should dress to impress-so she’d remember how dazzling she truly was.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
