Draven watched her with a slow lift of his brow. “So you’re pledging loyalty now? You think that’s going to get you a raise?”
Ayla shook her head so fast it almost looked desperate. “No. That’s not what I meant. Whatever Troy says doesn’t matter to me anymore.”
She only cared about the divorce papers. Once they were done, she would cut him out of her life.
She waited for Draven to say something. She thought he would respond. He said nothing.
She exhaled slowly. She guessed she expected something he was never going to give.
He was not someone who cared about drama.
A few seconds later, Ayla’s phone buzzed. Will had sent her ten thousand dollars.
Ayla sent every cent straight to Draven.
Draven checked his phone.
Ayla said, “This is the money I won back for you. Please take it, Mr. Storm.”
He accepted it this time, unlike last time.
Ayla felt relief wash over her.
Draven lived by strict rules. If the money belonged to him, he took it.
If it did not, he refused it without hesitation.
After they finished eating, Ayla began picking up the empty containers.
Draven said, “Leave them. That is not your job. Someone else will handle it.”
Ayla knew he couldn’t stand clutter. That was why she started cleaning early. She already finished half, so she cleaned the rest. She grabbed the trash and his suit jacket, murmured “Good night,” and headed out.
Draven stayed on the couch.
He opened James’s earlier messages.
James wrote, “I told you I wanted to drive Ayla home. You ordered all that food, then you suddenly claimed you were bored and left. That wasn’t a regular sudden.’ That was suspicious. Admit it. You wanted
to take her home.”
Draven typed, “Yes.”
James responded, “I knew it. You sneaky old fox.”

Then James added, “Explain something. Ayla thanked you in front of all of us. You froze like a statue. I had to answer for you. With that attitude, no wonder you’re single. Then you turn around and play gentleman. What are you doing?”
Draven wrote back, “Nothing.”
Ayla lived next door. Driving her home was simple. It was already on his way.
James wrote, “Sure. Keep pretending. Ayla said she can’t play tennis at all. You know beginners struggle so much. I’m teaching her tomorrow. You can stand there and watch.”
Draven replied with an ellipsis.
James wrote, “Already out of words?”
Draven answered, “Do what you want. It does not involve me.”
James sent back, “Amazing. Keep that energy. I hope you stay this clueless.”
Once James finished venting to Draven, he went to complain to Herman and Will.
If Will had not watched everything tonight with his own eyes, he would have agreed with James. He would have believed Mr. Storm treated Ayla differently.
Now he didn’t believe it at all.
Draven was the type of man everyone wanted. He had status, looks, money, and self-control. He never lacked admirers. It was shocking he stayed single this long.
There was only one explanation. He shut himself off.
grew up with,
His past and his personality built thick walls around him. Other than the few friends he grew up Draven kept everyone else at a distance.
A man that emotionally distant would not change overnight.
James could talk until he passed out. Draven would still ignore him.
So Will kept quiet. He would not join James in stirring things up again.
Ayla stepped into her place and called Halle the moment she walked inside. That was why she rushed home.
Halle answered fast. “Tell me he didn’t mess with you. Did Draven treat you right?”
She had been waiting for the call.
Ayla told her everything that happened.

Halle exploded. “That brat! She finally met someone who could shut her down!”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
