Ayla had already tossed the dress Bria ruined. She slipped out of the new one, dropped it into the washer, and stepped into the shower.
When she finished thirty minutes later, she pulled on her loungewear and headed to her study to work.
James set their tennis match for three in the afternoon and planned to finish at five.
Ayla had not played in a long time. She had no gear, so she went early to the shops near the tennis courts.
She picked out a lime-green racket and a white one-piece tennis dress. She was about to grab a headband. when a familiar voice called out.
“Ayla. What a coincidence.”
She turned and saw Max.
He wore a white tennis outfit, and his smile carried the same charm James had. His eyes looked deep and bright, and people in the shop kept staring.
Max said, “You here to play tennis too?”
The word “too” told her he was here by chance, not following her.
Max was one of Troy’s friends, so she should have kept her distance.
But at the AI Summit, Max helped her and gave her a way out.
And now that she thought about it, Max never treated her like Rolf/did. He never ignored her.
He even picked up Troy’s phone on her birthday and was the first to wish her well.
Ayla nodded. “Yes. I’m meeting a friend to play.”
Max looked surprised. “I never heard you say you played tennis.”
“I never had the chance before.”
Ayla lifted the gear in her hand to show she planned to pay and leave.
Max usually knew limits. She expected him to move aside. Instead, he stepped in front of her. He stood a head taller and lowered his gaze to meet hers.
He said, “Since we ran into each other, let me cover these for you.”
He tilted his chin toward the items she picked.
Ayla refused. She would not take advantage of him.

Ayla paid and assumed Max would leave. He didn’t. The moment she turned, he watched her and spoke again.
He was waiting for her to notice him. He asked, “What time do you meet your friend?”
“Three.”
Max checked his watch. His smile stayed easy. “You have thirty minutes. The courts are close. Let me buy you a coffee. We haven’t talked in a long time. It’ll be quick.”
Ayla paused.
They were not close.
Out of all Troy’s friends, she spoke with Max the most, but only because of Troy.
They never talked about anything else.
She wondered if Troy sent him to check her answer about working at Storm Group.
But she dismissed that thought almost instantly.
If Troy wanted something, he would have Bria toss the message at her.
She meant nothing to him. He was sure she would listen to him like she always did. All he needed was for someone to relay his message to her.
He never needed Max for that. She also had not blocked Troy yet. She needed to contact him to finalize the divorce. If he wanted something, he would call her himself.
Max saw her hesitation. He said, “We can just talk. And if you don’t want to talk, just drink your coffee. I won’t push.”
Ayla and Max were not strangers, and she had time. It was just coffee. She did not need to overthink.
They went into a café.
Max ordered an iced americano, then looked at her.
Ayla said, “I’ll have the same.”
Max smiled at the server. “Two iced americanos.”
The server looked young, maybe a college student.
Max’s smile made her blush bright red before she hurried off.
When Max turned around, he saw Ayla watching him. His body froze for a second.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
