Chapter 78 Coffee Shop
Max remembered that look in her eyes.

It stayed sharp in his memory and kept coming back to him, even though he only glanced at first.
He realized she must have tried to fit into their circle once and stopped after she got hurt.
That was what smart people did.
He felt lucky he never treated her the way others did. He hated seeing girls get ignored or upset. That small kindness kept her from ever disliking him.
If he had acted like the others, she would not even sit here for coffee.
He stayed quiet until the drinks arrived at their table. The moment they did, he took a sip and spoke.
Max said, “Ayla, I’ve wanted to apologize for a long time.”
He sounded serious.
Ayla set down her cup. “Why?”
Max said, “The day Skyla came back, I sent you that video by accident. I thought you didn’t see it, so I never explained it. I know it must have upset you, and I’m sorry.”
He looked sincere when he said it.
But he sent it on purpose.
He wanted her to see it.
Ayla remembered that time clearly. She had just lost her baby, and Troy had been celebrating Skyla instead. The pain had nearly crushed her.
Now it felt far away, like another life. The Ayla back then felt crushed.
She felt grateful for the push Max gave her.
Without that video, she might still be trapped.
She’d never have the courage to talk about divorce. She would be trapped in a tragic marriage and ruin herself and had no idea about it. If Max didn’t talk about the mistext, she wouldn’t either. But he did.
Ayla said, “Good thing I saw it. Otherwise I wouldn’t have had the courage to leave Troy. Sometimes the worst thing ends up being the right push.”
Max already suspected her answer last night.
Hearing it out loud still made his heart pound.

He asked her out today to confirm it.
Her answer mattered to him more than he wanted to admit.
He lifted his brows with fake surprise. He said, “Really? You’re serious about the divorce?”

Ayla said, “I know you all used to bet on how fast I would run back to Troy. I bet you all made bets about it again this time.”
She knows everything.
Max felt his face burn. “I’m sorry.”
Ayla said, “It’s fine. I was a joke back then. This time, I’ve made up my mind.”
Max felt a sudden sting in his chest. He didn’t know if it was sympathy or something else. He only knew it hit harder because it came from Ayla.
Max said, “Don’t say that. You were stronger than all of us.”
He knew he never had the courage to love someone the way she loved Troy. She gave everything. He had never given anyone that much.
Ayla said, “Max, you’re the best at comforting people. I was pathetic, and you’re here calling me strong. Impressive.”
Max froze.
She meant he flirted with everyone.
He suddenly hated his entire reputation. I don’t flirt with just anyone.
He fell silent and the smile dropped from his face.
Something darker settled in his eyes.
Ayla noticed immediately. Ayla said, “What’s wrong?”
Max said, “I needed someone to talk to today.”
Ayla asked, “You have something going on?”
Max said, “I broke up with my girlfriend.” It was the influencer he had dated.
She clung to him in a way he couldn’t handle. Refusing was cruel to him. He broke up, gave her millions,
and never touched her once.
Everyone believed Max slept around. They thought he changed girls nonstop. None of it was true. Some people thought he was bi, though.
Ayla said, “Really?”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
