Emmett hadn't expected his friend to react so strongly. He rushed over, trying to calm them both down. "Hey, hey, let's just talk this out. Don't do this."

That thought triggered a deep fear inside her. Like an animal with its fur standing on end, once fear took hold, she couldn't keep her emotions or even basic rationality in check. Emmett felt like he'd just swallowed something too much to handle. Even if he wanted to smooth things over, he didn't have the energy or the nerve anymore.

The two of them looked like they were about to fight, and whatever was going on between them was way beyond anything he could step into.
