Emmett sighed about his terrible luck while forcing a smile as he walked over. "Ms. Winston, what brings you here?"
Bria lifted her gaze, watching his overly polite attitude, and couldn't help thinking how nice it would be if Kaleb treated her like this too. But then again, Kaleb had been attentive at the start, and she hadn't liked him then. People really were ridiculous, always drawn to a challenge, to conquest, and now she'd ended up in this passive position.
"I came to see you, obviously," Bria said, tilting her chin toward his house. "I'm having dinner at your place tonight."
Emmett froze on the spot, caught in a dilemma. If he refused Bria, he couldn't handle the consequences. But if he let her in, he'd be betraying his friend.
Gosh, my life really sucks.
Bria saw his hesitation and felt zero sympathy. "I've been waiting out here for an hour."
That did it. Emmett's resolve crumbled, and he had no choice but to let her in.
Hosting a rich heiress for dinner was no small matter. In his experience, people from that world didn't think about inconveniencing others or being considerate. Emmett had mentally prepared for all kinds of trouble, but Bria just said she was fine with anything.
Aside from food, she didn't make any unreasonable demands. She just wandered around the living room casually.
She didn't talk much or try to chat with him, just looked at the decor, occasionally asking about something that caught her interest. She seemed normal. Even polite.
Emmett was stunned. He had assumed someone like her would have impossibly high standards, completely detached from ordinary life. After all, she was used to the best of everything. Compared to her, even his family's wealth felt like a different level. He'd expected her to look down on everything here, to be critical and dismissive.
He really had thought that. But Bria wasn't like that at all. When she looked at something, it felt like genuine curiosity.
It left Emmett completely thrown off. His impression of her shifted a little, but at the same time, he was even more confused about what she was trying to do. Something about all of this felt off.
Emmett wasn't much of a cook, and he hadn't bought ingredients in advance, so there was no way he could cook himself. He ordered meat fondue delivery instead.
By the time the food arrived, Kaleb was back.
Bria was already seated at the table, utensils in hand, ready to eat. When Kaleb got home, he stopped at the door and didn't step inside.
It had only been two days, but to Bria, it felt like a month. Strange. Do I really miss him that much? Still, she only raised a brow and glanced at him without saying anything, then went back to focusing on the meat fondue, piling slices of beef onto her plate.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
