Ayla already knew James had gone to stay with Halle, so she wasn't surprised they ended up together. Still, it felt like a huge, happy surprise.
She leaned close and whispered in Halle's ear, "Are you serious about this?"
Halle nodded.
Ayla's eyes lit up even more. A serious relationship wasn't easy. It meant things could be stable in the future. Halle wasn't someone who fell in love easily, so seeing her take this step made Ayla truly happy.
"Why didn't you tell me right away?" Ayla asked. That was her only complaint.
She wanted to be the first to congratulate her.
Halle smiled a little. "We've only been together for a few days, and I felt a bit shy telling you."
"What's there to be shy about?"
"Haha... I don't know. I just felt shy."
Ayla didn't push it. "Alright, I forgive you."
Blake also congratulated James and Halle warmly.
She was one of the top executives in the company and Draven's right-hand person. As a woman in her 30s, she gave off a strong, powerful vibe. She looked like a career-focused woman who was hard to approach.
No one ever asked her about dating. The way she carried herself made it seem like she didn't need a relationship at all.
Herman also congratulated James.
They were all around the same age. Draven and James both had girlfriends now. Only Herman was still single. No one usually pressured him about it, but James couldn't help bringing it up.
Herman had a refined, gentlemanly look, but sometimes there was a hint of a playboy in him.
Like now, when he said, "No rush. I'm not done having fun yet."
After saying that, he glanced at someone—but no one noticed.
When Will heard that, he quickly said, "Even Mr. Howell isn't in a hurry. James, stop picking on me."
James didn't let him off. "Herman's single, sure—but he's better than you. If he wants a girlfriend, he can find one anytime. What about you? Do you even know how to talk to women?"
Will decided not to argue anymore. Still, he sincerely wished them both well.
...
After dinner, everyone went their separate ways.
James didn't drive home. "I've got one more stop. There's someone who doesn't know yet."
Halle looked curious. "Who?"
"You forgot? My unlucky cousin, Max," James said with a grin. "He's the hardest one for me to deal with, so I have to make sure he knows I'm taken now. If I don't show off a little, I can't stand it."
"You're unbelievable," Halle said. She knew Max was close friends with Troy. Back then, he had even gotten involved in Ayla and Troy's situation. So, it would be awkward for him to show up at gatherings with Ayla and Draven. Meeting him separately was better.
There was a reason he found James annoying—because comments like that were just asking for a punch.
Max smirked and shot back at Halle, "I can't believe you picked him. You've got an interesting taste."
Halle curled her lips slightly.
Now she finally understood something. Back then, when James said his family kept pressuring him to get married and that he ran off to Trensea to escape, it was probably just an act to gain sympathy.
He was clearly the most traditional one in the family, always pushing Max to settle down.
But of course, Halle stood on James's side. And her words could be just as sharp.
"Mr. Bennett, you've got it even harder. I feel sorry for you," she said coolly.
Max was instantly annoyed.
These two are unbelievable!
Now that they were together, his life was definitely going to get worse.
For a moment, Max even wondered if he should start dating someone.
But the person he liked didn't like him back. And he didn't know who else he could date.
In the end, he didn't agree to anything. He just brushed James off. He knew James wasn't just sharing good news, he was also passing along the family's pressure.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
