Blake stayed quiet for a few seconds before she said, "I'm not sure..."
"You can be a little more sure than that," Herman encouraged her.
Blake said, "When... did you start liking me?"
Herman smiled this time, but he still kept teasing her. "I'll tell you when I officially pass the probation."
Blake shot him a cold glance.
That's right. They were still trying to move things forward between them.
At first, Blake really hadn't expected anything at all. But after her surgery experience, and now that Herman wasn't hiding it anymore and was openly showing his feelings, things had turned out completely different from what she expected. The outcome she had once assumed might not happen after all.
Herman had a point. Whether or not someone loved her, she didn't really care. But she did need someone to take care of her—that part was real and practical.
And Herman's level of care was nothing like what you'd get from just hiring a caretaker.
You could actually feel it when someone truly cared about you.
If she needed care, then she would naturally choose someone who could take care of her properly.
At this point, Herman was the only real option.
Blake liked practical things. For example, she treated having a sex partner as a way to relieve stress. She agreed to try taking their relationship further because being taken care of didn't seem like a bad idea.
And now, whether to keep going was because during this trial period, Herman had taken very good care of her.
Blake didn't do anything fake or fancy.
She only paid for things that brought real benefit. Otherwise, nothing was worth her time or effort.
So, she had already made up her mind.
But she wouldn't say it yet.
Mainly because she was still processing the fact that Herman actually liked her.
He must have fallen for her a long time ago.
And she hadn't noticed at all.
Blake asked, "Was our first time together your doing?"
Herman sighed at her cold, emotionless image of him. It really didn't change at all.
Did she really think I was that bad?
Sure, he was a bit ruthless in business, but when it came to feelings, he was very serious. If he cared about someone, he wouldn't mix it with anything dirty or dishonest.
"You're insulting my feelings," he said.
Blake looked even more shocked. "So... you liked me even before that?"
Herman was at a loss for words.
He had just accidentally spoiled everything.
Blake felt like things had completely gone off track from what she expected. In the end, she asked, "Why would you go through a secret crush with a face like that?"
A faint curve appeared on Herman's lips. If he hadn't kept it secret, how could he have stayed by her side all this time?
A few years ago, Blake was even sharper and more energetic. She was strong, focused on her work, and had no interest in romance at all. There was simply no space for anyone in her world.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
