Teresa’s heart started pounding. Just as the call was about to end, she finally picked up. She didn’t say anything, and neither did the person on the other end.

It wasn’t until Jonathan finally spoke, “Hello?”

Hearing his familiar, deep voice, Teresa took a deep breath and tried to keep her voice steady as she asked, “What do you want?”

Jonathan’s voice was tinged with impatience. He snapped, “Gary said you’re back at work? You went to the office?”

Jonathan quickly asked, “Did you ask about where I was?”

“What?” Teresa asked. She didn’t hear him clearly.

Jonathan said, “Benny told me that you asked where I went. Are you really that concerned about my schedule?”

Teresa sneered inwardly, ‘As expected, Benny is still on Jonathan’s side.‘ She then said, “I was just making small talk, that’s all. Like I said before–where you go has nothing to do with me.”

“Alright, if that’s what you think,” Jonathan said, a trace of resignation in his voice. He thought, ‘I knew she was never going to reach out to me first anyway.‘

He added, “Then I’ll say the same–unless you come looking for me, I won’t be the one to contact you again.”

Teresa thought, ‘So that’s why he had Irene answer the phone and didn’t bother coming back for Mike’s first day at kindergarten. He never even asked when Mike would start school.

Teresa shot back, “Why would I need to reach out to you? I’m busy too. After work, I still have to pick up Mike.”

Jonathan asked, “Does Mike really need you to pick him up? There’s the driver, Gary, the bodyguards–so many people you could ask. Do you have to do it yourself?”

Teresa replied, “I’m not like you. Today is Mike’s first day at kindergarten. Do you think he’d be happy without his parents there with him?”

Jonathan fell silent for a moment before saying, “I’ve already called the principal at the kindergarten to make sure Mike’s taken care of, so I’m not worried about him at all.
