Ashton had always been hung up on his background.

“I can tell that you hate your father,” Lawrence remarked steadily.

“How can I not hate a father who abandoned his child and a husband who left his wife without so much as a word of goodbye?” Ashton said.

A father was every child’s first hero, but from the moment Ashton could think, he felt nothing but resentment and disdain for his father.

If that man had shouldered even an ounce of his responsibility as a father, Ashton, Madison, and Irene wouldn’t have had to suffer so much throughout his childhood.

“I think your father might’ve had his reasons for leaving.”

“His reasons?” Ashton repeated.

Lawrence looked out the window without answering, and Ashton astutely stopped asking.

After about an hour, the sedan parked outside a pitch–black cemetery.

“Mr. Clarkson Senior? What are you doing here?”

A caretaker hobbled over with the help of a cane, his body covered in chilling scars.

“I brought someone over to visit our fallen brothers and seniors.”

Turning to Neil and Kayla, Lawrence said, “I’ll walk around with Ashton. You two wait here for us.”

With that said, he led Ashton deep into the cemetery. As they walked through the place, every gravestone they passed by was etched with the name of a deceased legionnaire who died in service to the nation.

Ashton couldn’t help but grow solemn.

While walking, Lawrence said, “I’m sure you’ve deduced by now that I’m from the Legion, Ashton.”

Ashton nodded. That was easy enough to figure out, but he didn’t want to have any dealings with the Legion. He was certain that once he came into contact with them, it would lead to endless trouble.

Coming to a stop, Lawrence said to Ashton, “Allow me to introduce myself properly. My name is Lawrence Clarkson, and I’m the head of the Legion.”

Ashton’s eyes widened at once. Although he’d guessed that Lawrence was no ordinary man, he never would’ve thought that the old man was the powerful head of the Legion! That was equivalent to being the head of a government department!

Why would such an important figure show an interest in him? And why would Lawrence know about the peculiar side effects he had when he underwent a cultivation breakthrough?

Ashton had many questions to ask, but he was certain about one thing–Lawrence harbored no ill will toward him.

Ashton was deeply affected by Lawrence’s sharing.
