Despite not being very loud, Lawrence’s voice seemed to echo in Ashton’s ears anyway. He sensed the raw sincerity of his words, and for a moment, he felt as though Lawrence was gambling his entire legacy on him.

Ashton didn’t even have to think to know the kind of storm that would be triggered if news got out that Lawrence had made him the deputy head of the Legion.

Lawrence would surely be hit with a tidal wave of doubt and condemnation. A single flawed move could instantly reduce his lifelong honor to nothing and make him go down in history with a sullied reputation.

Staring into Lawrence’s gleaming eyes, Ashton felt a fiery passion igniting in his veins.

“I’ll do it, Mr. Clarkson Senior. I’ll be the head of the Legion!”

Ashton knew full well that by accepting this responsibility, his life would be changed for good. While he would rise to a seat of absolute power, he would also be confronted with unending danger.

“Excellent! Excellent!” Lawrence exclaimed, his eyes teary.

He could see a future for the Legion now!

“From now on, Mr. Clarkson Senior, I will be responsible for the glory of the Legion!” Ashton promised.

It was all or nothing with him. Either he refused the role, or he would return the Legion to its former glory.

With a heartfelt smile, Lawrence took off the battle robe he wore and put it on Ashton. Patting Ashton on the shoulder, he said, “The Legion is now in your hands.”

Ashton looked at Lawrence’s slight frame and said solemnly, “I’ll give it my all until my very last breath.”

“Why is a young man like you talking about death? Come. It’s time for us to head back.”

The two of them walked side by side, their footsteps light.

“Mr. Clarkson Senior, you said just now that my father might’ve had his reasons for leaving us.”

Nodding, Lawrence said, “You’re a father yourself, Ash. I trust that no father would abandon his child, not unless he had to. I suspect that your father might’ve left because the Drake family tracked him down.”

Keeping his voice low, he continued, “The Drake family maintains an iron grip over the purity of their bloodline. Even if a member of the family died, the body has to be brought back to the Drake family. They would never allow one of them to disappear without a trace…”

“Mr. Clarkson Senior, are you suggesting that my father might’ve left to protect us?”

Lawrence nodded. “If your father had been a heartless man, he should’ve just killed all of you. That way, no one will ever find out he had children whose lineage isn’t pure.

“For the Drakes, such an act is a betrayal punishable by death. If your father’s secret had been discovered, it would’ve spelled certain death for him. Leaving in silence was the best way of keeping all of you safe.”

Ashton had a sinking feeling in his heart. “Does this mean my father might be in danger?”

“That depends on whether the Drake family unearthed his secret–that he had children outside of the lineage.”

“What would’ve happened if they did?”

A chill ran down Ashton’s spine.

“Just how powerful is the Drake family, Mr. Clarkson Senior?”

“Why do you ask? Are you tempted to barge your way into their territory?”

“If my father had been tormented in such a manner, then as his son, it is only right for me to avenge him!”

Ashton clenched his fists, his eyes glinting darkly.
