Tanya was utterly unhinged, acting like a common street hag, Ashton had forced her to grovel and apologize before him back then. She had now been struck across the face in public, and worse, at the prestigious Auric Night gala.
She couldn’t possibly bear such public humiliation, especially considering how proud she was. She was now fixing Ashton with bloodshot eyes brimming with fury.
It wasn’t long before all attention converged on the confrontation, causing a stir of commotion to erupt around them.
Sylvia, looking somewhat anxious, whispered, “Auric Night is the single most important annual event for the Gale Assembly, so no one ever risks making a scene here. W–Why don’t we just leave for now, Ashton?”
“Why should we be the ones leaving, Sylvia? I’m here as your plus–one to Auric Night. I also have an appointment with Natalie in this event later, so leaving is out of the question,” Ashton stated.
His expression remained completely calm, as if he were talking about something insignificant.
“I’m just worried that the people from the Gale Assembly would retaliate against you, Ashton. They are a force as huge and ruthless as the Holt Crew! Their head, Cadence Suther, is downright terrifying!” Sylvia warned, fearing that Ashton’s reckless actions would cost him.
They were on the Gale Assembly’s turf, after all.
“You can rest assured that those people back in the Gale Assembly operate on the principle of reason, Sylvia,” Ashton said with a smile.
“How dare you hit Mom, Ashton? You have the goddamn nerve! Get down and grovel before my mother to beg for forgiveness now!” Robert bellowed as he supported Tanya, aiming to grab the host’s attention and make Ashton pay for his actions.
“How dare you, Ashton? Mom was once your mother–in–law, for goodness‘ sake! How could you be so disrespectful toward her? How could you be so utterly unconscionable!” Roxy shouted at Ashton after watching Tanya get slapped before her eyes.
In the past, Ashton had always treated Tanya with the utmost deference. He would simply bear the slight without ever retorting, even in the face of suffering. Yet, as soon as the divorce was finalized, Ashton immediately dropped his pretense.
“That good–for–nothing is a violent lunatic, Roxy! He mustn’t be let off lightly today!” Tanya snapped. Ashton scoffed. “Your mother isn’t worthy of my respect! I simply held back in the past because she was my mother–in–law! What right does she have to insult me and slander my woman now, Roxy?”
Roxy’s expression shifted slightly after hearing Ashton’s declaration of “my woman“.
Sylvia, on the other hand, was overcome with joy, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. That one sentence from Ashton was all the validation she would ever need–so much so that she felt like she could die without any
regret.
“What’s going on here?”

Several figures detached themselves from the onlookers and made their way to the commotion, Henry Johnson, the man at the head of the group, sported a clear look of disapproval as his eyes rapidly sized up Ashton and
Tanya.
“That good–for–nothing hit me! He has completely undermined the significance of Auric Night and shows a blatant disregard for Mr. Suther! He must be severely disciplined!” Tanya yelled.
Henry’s face blanched the moment he registered the gold invitation in Tanya’s hand. He realized that anyone who possessed such an invitation was far beyond his reach to offend. He immediately put on an appeasing smile and said, “You can rest assured that I’ll handle this matter fairly, madam.”
He then looked at Ashton and Sylvia indifferently. He knew what he had to do upon spotting their silver invitation. He commanded coldly, “Get that man and slap him ten times to settle the score for our esteemed guest!”
He understood the value of the gold invitation too well–only a handful of people in Auric Night possessed one. He was certain he would be fired if he couldn’t appease Tanya’s fury.
Tanya smiled with satisfaction. “That’s right! Get him and deliver those ten slaps! You’d better make sure to lay into him so that the good–for–nothings will learn his lesson!”
It was then that the group of men closed in, completely encircling Ashton and Sylvia.
Sylvia’s face paled as she murmured, “You should make a run for it when the moment comes, Ashton. You don’t have to worry about me since they won’t really do anything to me. You and I can talk about this once we get through tonight.”
