Chapter 456
Everyone backed away when Kayla and Lawrence approached. No one dared to stop them.
“Mr. Clarkson Senior!”
Both Flint’s and Ronan’s expressions turned stormy when they saw Lawrence. While they’d already known that Ashton was part of the Legion, they never expected Lawrence to show up here in person.
Wasn’t he rumored to be close to taking his dying breath? That his days were numbered?
The two of them cautiously swept their gazes over Lawrence’s face. They could clearly see that he was weakened and looked visibly exhausted.
Taking a deep breath, Ronan forced himself to smile as he bowed his head and said, “Greetings, Mr. Clarkson Senior!”
Regardless of the animosity between the Dominion Vanguard and the Legion, he had to bow to Lawrence out of respect for Lawrence’s position.
“Ronan Hopper? Who would’ve thought that the little brat from all those years ago would end up being a deputy head of the Dominion Vanguard now?” Lawrence remarked, his expression neutral.
Looking rather smug, Ronan said haughtily, “Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Clarkson Senior.”
“The compliment? You misunderstood my words. I meant to say that the Dominion Vanguard seems to be running out of talent. To think that the likes of you managed to become a deputy head. I guess it won’t be long before the organization falls apart completely,” Lawrence said bluntly.
Ronan’s expression stiffened, a surge of anger rising in his heart. His fists clenched tightly, but he forcibly suppressed his fury before saying, “You’re very astute, Mr. Clarkson Senior. But I wonder what brings you here today.”
Ronan had no intention of arguing with Lawrence. His objective was to kill Ashton, eliminate the potential threat to the Dominion Vanguard, and give the Jalunese an explanation for Cornelius‘ death.
“Didn’t you hear me clearly just now? Ashton has done a great service to Casoria. Who permitted you to lay your hands on him? I even heard you wanted to convict him.”
Lawrence’s eyes flashed coldly as he slowly raised his arm and unfolded his fingers. He slapped Ronan right across the face.
As it was, he moved so slowly that Ronan got a clear view of what he was doing. Yet, for some reason, Ronan felt as though he’d been glued to the spot. He couldn’t move at all. Even the protective barrier he’d just barely managed to form was immediately eviscerated.
Lawrence’s powerful slap landed hard on Ronan’s face, leaving a clearly visible handprint.
Eyes bloodshot, Ronan was brimming with murderous rage as he glared at Lawrence, questioning, “What’s the meaning of this, Mr. Clarkson Senior?”
“What’s the meaning of this? Don’t tell me you don’t know,” Lawrence rebutted coldly, showing no regard for Ronan at all. “I’ve already said that Ashton has done a great service to the nation.

“As a deputy head of the Dominion Vanguard, you not only wanted to make him a criminal but even tried to threaten him. Do you think it’s wrong of me to slap you?”
“Mr. Clarkson Senior, Ashton killed Cornelius Slater, the head of the Jalunese Martial Academy and a member of the Jalunese Martial Association!
“Now that he’s dead, the Jalunese Martial Association will certainly demand an explanation! How are we to pacify them if we don’t arrest Ashton? If this leads to a conflict between the two nations, I doubt that even you can bear the consequences, Mr. Clarkson Senior,” Ronan warned through gritted teeth, his tone threatening and his eyes blazing with anger.
But at the same time, he felt extremely wary.
Just from the slap earlier, he instantly recognized that, even though Lawrence was old and past his prime, he was still a fearsome expert who couldn’t be underestimated.
Suddenly, Lawrence raised his arm again and slapped Ronan once more on the same cheek. Even though Ronan had his guard up again, he still couldn’t block it. The overlapping handprints turned his face a bright crimson.
Ronan’s eyes were now entirely bloodshot. He could no longer suppress the fury in his heart as he fumed, “Mr. Clarkson Senior! Are you hellbent on challenging the Dominion Vanguard? The Legion is no longer what it once was, you know. It might not be a match for us!”
If not because he knew that he couldn’t defeat Lawrence, he would’ve struck by now. Being slapped twice in a row was an unthinkable humiliation for him!
