Chapter 492
“75 million dollars!” Damian roared, his competitiveness flaring up once again at Roxy and Eunice’s
remarks.
He refused to back down. His pride was on the line, and he simply couldn’t endure the humiliation of losing. He was determined to make sure Ashton walked away empty–handed, no matter the cost.
In that instant, a collective gasp rippled through the crowd as their attentions shifted back to Ashton.
Ashton looked at the almost frenzied Damian and sneered. “You certainly are generous, Mr. Payne—I just wonder how much capital you have left to deploy. I’ll bid 80 million dollars!”
Damian slumped in defeat after hearing that figure. He realized then that no matter how much his temper flared, he knew he couldn’t raise the bid again. Otherwise, he faced the very real possibility of being unceremoniously kicked out of the Payne family.
“I’ll let you have it for 80 million dollars, Ashton! It actually brings me a lot of joy to watch you spend a fortune on a worthless compendium!” Damian huffed, clearly trying to salvage his pride.
Ashton ignored Damian entirely; his only focus was the Compendium of Special Constitutions, an item of vital importance to him. He knew that because it was a one–time–use spiritual artifact, if he let this opportunity slip through his fingers, he might never get another chance to find one.
“90 million dollars!”
Just when Ashton thought the bidding was over, a cold, indifferent voice suddenly rang out. That speaker was none other than Clay, the future head of the Dominion Vanguard.
Clay slowly got to his feet, a wild, unrestrained smile playing on his lips. “You seem quite desperate to get
your
hands on the Compendium of Special Constitutions, Ashton. It’s quite a shame, though, as I’m also quite curious to learn about the various female constitutions of the world.
“I’ll be taking this from you, then! If you want to fight me for it, feel free to keep bidding, but I highly doubt you have what it takes to beat me.”
He was determined to snatch the Compendium of Special Constitutions away from Ashton. He had a strong. intuition that he absolutely could not allow Ashton to obtain this treasure. Otherwise, Ashton would likely become even more terrifying and formidable.
Ashton cocked his brow as a heavy feeling settled in his chest. He knew he couldn’t win a bidding war against a titan like Clay, the future head of the Dominion Vanguard. He couldn’t just walk away from it, though.
His eyes flashed with murderous intent, thinking that if Clay managed to get the Compendium of Special Constitutions, his only remaining path would be to kill the man and seize the treasure for himself. He was determined to own the compendium, and he would kill whoever stood in his way.
“100 million dollars!” Ashton took a deep breath and pushed the bid straight to the top.
That bid immediately set the atmosphere ablaze, drawing countless gazes to Ashton. There were even several women who began to look at him with subtle, flirtatious glances.

They couldn’t care less if Ashton acquired the Compendium of Special Constitutions–they were merely captivated by a man who was both attractive and capable of spending such a fortune. They were all wondering if they might get lucky with him before the night was over.
Ashton paid no attention to the women. He simply fixed his gaze on Clay, hoping the man would recognize the danger and back down, rather than choosing a path that led to his own demise.
Clay, sensing the threatening glare from Ashton, was overcome by a piercing coldness that resonated through his entire being. He felt as though he were staring into the eyes of the Grim Reaper at that juncture.
“It’s 100 million dollars. There’s no need to go any further, Clay,” Felix said with a shake of his head. He could clearly sense Ashton’s killing intent, and for some reason, that intent made even a man of his experience shudder.
“110 million dollars!” Clay bellowed, his face twisting into a mask of pure aggression.
He ignored the warnings and stared Ashton down with a predatory intensity as he declared, “I’ll gladly spend this much just to humiliate you, Ashton! You ought to know that this is the true depth of the Dominion Vanguard’s resources! I mean, does the Legion even come close to having this much weight?” Upon hearing that, Eunice gave a violent shudder. What did Clay mean by that?
She couldn’t help but wonder if Ashton was actually a member of the Legion, though it seemed quite impossible. She had personally vetted every recruit who had joined their ranks recently, and Ashton’s name had never been among them.
