Roxy picked up on the blatant hostility in Elise’s expression and tone right away. She was completely at a loss. As far as she knew, she had never done anything to slight the renowned head of Blossom Hall.

She reached out and shook Elise’s hand briefly, wearing a polished, professional smile. “I apologize for whatever Robert had done to cross you, Ms. Haywood. I’d appreciate it if you could show me some leniency and let him go. I’ll see to it that the Blossom Hall is compensated tenfold for the inconvenience!”

She had plenty of matters to deal with and had no desire to make an enemy of Blossom Hall. She thought that if she could resolve this quietly and move on, it would be for the best.

“You want me to show you some leniency? You’ll find that your name carries very little weight within these walls, Ms. Sloan!” Elise snarled.

Her lingering smile vanished, replaced by a cold, distant expression.

She then said indifferently, “You ought to know that order is built on rules, Ms. Sloan. It is common knowledge that there is a steep price for stirring up trouble in my establishment.

“If I let you take him back today, then anyone could walk in here tomorrow and demand the same. If that happens, what would become of the rules of the Blossom Hall, Ms. Sloan?”

Roxy furrowed her brow at Elise’s uncompromising stance. She felt a wave of enmity from Elise that was almost entirely undisguised. She was quite baffled about it, as this was their very first encounter. She couldn’t help but wonder where such deep–seated animosity could have come from.
