She hadn’t thought that far ahead just now. She only wanted to use Ashton’s status as her boyfriend to make Connor back off. It was never her intention for Connor to start targeting Ashton.

After all, the Heavenly Medical Pavilion truly wasn’t easy to deal with.

“Ashton…”

Wanda wanted to explain herself, but Ashton simply pulled her even closer before saying to Julia, “Since I’m Wanda’s boyfriend, Mrs. Shepherd, it’s my job to protect her. You don’t need to worry about that.”

Ashton was slightly taken aback. He hadn’t expected Julia to uncover information about him in such a short time. It seemed the Shepherd family truly did wield a great deal of influence.

“You can see for yourself whether I’m able to take them on,” he answered nonchalantly. “But I need to remind you, Mrs. Shepherd. You’d better not force Wanda into anything she doesn’t want to do anymore, especially when it comes to her marriage.”

“Are you lecturing me?” Julia’s expression turned icy. “The Legion is a failing organization that has fallen from grace ages ago and will even vanish from the footnotes of history soon enough. What gives you the audacity to take this attitude with me?”

“Mom!”

Wanda frowned, extremely displeased with Julia’s attitude toward Ashton.

Ashton patted Wanda’s back to reassure her. “Let me handle this.”

After shielding her behind him, he took a step forward and looked Julia right in the eye as he said earnestly, “I’m not lecturing you, Mrs. Shepherd. I’m just protecting my girlfriend. If you, a mother, can’t even protect your own daughter, then I’ll do it.

“I’ll give Wanda the freedom to make her own choices. Do you understand me now, Mrs. Shepherd?”

Wanda’s heart trembled, and the look she gave Ashton changed once again. A new tenderness had replaced the previous flicker

of casual flirtation.

As she stood behind Ashton, she felt a sense of security that she hadn’t felt in a long time. It was as if the tall, broad–shouldered man before her would shield her from any storm that came her way.

Julia’s frown deepened further. She was extremely displeased with Ashton’s arrogance and conceit.

Just then, she glanced down at her phone and saw the message she had just received. Now that she knew even more about Ashton’s background, she scoffed.

“I see. You’re just a worthless loser who got dumped by his wife. Here I was, wondering who would be as cocky as you.

“You’re Ashton Gray, a former thug of Javonbury’s criminal underworld who somehow lucked into becoming a legionnaire. Two days from now, you’ll be engaged in a duel to the death at the Apex Arena with Clay Jernigan, the future head of the Dominion Vanguard.

“So your days are numbered, huh? That explains your reckless arrogance.”

Julia shook her head in disappointment. “Wanda, Ashton will be dead in two days. Why did you pick someone like him to be your boyfriend? Do you know how many families and factions would kill to have a shot at allying themselves with the Heavenly Medical Pavilion?
