The crowd within the Apex Arena grew increasingly restless. People kept glancing toward every entrance, but Ashton’s figure still hadn’t appeared.
“Ashton chickened out. He’s made a run for it!”
“Ashton’s scared to die, so he became a deserter!”
“I’ve received confirmation! Ashton knows he’s no match for Clay, so he’s already fled abroad!”
The rumors spread like wildfire.
Almost instantly, Clay’s odds for victory plummeted, while Ashton’s odds shot through the roof, eventually hitting a staggering 6–to–1 payout!
The betting pool had now soared to 50 billion dollars, and Wanda was sweating profusely.
She’d already increased the bets on Ashton as planned. If he lost the match, it’ll be a total wipeout, the kind that could never be
recovered from.
“Wanda, do you finally see Ashton’s true colors now? He’s a coward who chose to desert. He’s not fit to be the son–in–law of the Shepherd family and not fit to be your husband! At least, if he’d chosen to die in the fight despite knowing he would lose, I
would’ve respected him as a man.”
Julia kept shaking her head, her expression of Ashton hitting rock bottom. He was just an arrogant yet useless man. She wasn’t going to let someone like that sully her daughter.
“You know nothing, Mom! Ashton’s not like that!” Wanda frowned.
At that moment, her phone buzzed. A message from Ashton had arrived.
Wanda’s lips curled into a smile. She immediately got back to manipulating the betting pool. This was such an elaborate scheme!
Once the match concluded, she was certain Julia would have to rethink her opinion of Ashton. Perhaps she could even convince Julia to call off the marriage alliance with Connor.
“Grandpa! Why haven’t we heard from Mr. Bloomberg? Has something happened to Ashton? Did the Dominion Vanguard resort to some underhanded trick?” Kayla’s expression was tight.
It went without saying that she didn’t believe Ashton would chicken out of the fight. He was practically dripping with self- confidence. There was no way he’d become a deserter. Clearly, something must’ve happened.
“I don’t know if it’s the Dominion Vanguard or some other people’s devious trick, but that changes nothing.” Lawrence glanced at the message he received, his eyes darkening.
He didn’t spend a single second worrying about Ashton, who was already a semi–divine realm expert. Anyone who tried to pull a dirty trick on him outside of the arena would feel nothing but despair.
But soon, he made himself look anxious. He even stood up and began pacing around, fidgeting endlessly.
Kayla blinked. She knew Lawrence, too well. He was putting on a show again, but it seemed a little over the top this time.
While thinking to herself that Lawrence and Ashton must be up to no good again, she continued to pay attention to the betting odds, placing more bets at the right times.
Who wouldn’t want to get rich?
“Look at Mr. Clarkson Senior! He’s panicking! Hahaha! Guess this means Ashton really did rum oft. It’s time for us to make a fortune. Quick! Before anyone else catches on, hurry up and place a bigger bet. This is free money, guys. There’s no reason to let this opportunity slip by!”

“Some fools are still placing bets on Ashton winning. Hahaha! This is a windfall. Only the biggest idiot in the world would lose out on this chance to make a guaranteed fortune. Use everything you have as collateral to place a bet on Clay winning. This is our final chance!”
“I’m doing it! I’m going all in! I can’t wait to achieve financial freedom!”
“Who knew the collapse of the Legion would result in us receiving such a massive windfall? Those legionnaires are so generous!
”
“Who’s Ashton Gray anyway? Why did the Legion place its trust in such a worthless fool? They might as well have backed me up instead. I’m the king of the world, I swear!”
“Place your bets! Place your bets, everyone!”
The people on the side of the Dominion Vanguard were practically euphoric, as if they could already imagine the profits they would be receiving.
Flint glanced at the rain before asking with a smile, “Have you placed the bet for five billion dollars, Irina?”
Irina nodded. “As per your instructions, I placed the debt when the odds were the highest for Clay’s win, but…”
“But what? You think I have too much faith in Clay?” Flint smirked. “It was never Clay that I had faith in. I only have faith in
myself.”
Irina stiffened, and she soon thought of something, exclaiming, “Is Ashton still not here because you made a move?”
