Ashton explained to Sylvia, “Did you notice the sickly pallo beneath Natalie’s makeup? There’s something wrong with her health. I also sensed a kind of uncomfortable energy off Hank. It matched the malevolent energy I detected on Natalie.”

“Ashton, are you saying that Natalie is sick, and Hank has something to do with it?” Sylvia exclaimed. “Now that you mention it, I did hear some rumors about her being gravely ill and possibly no longer being able to manage Yorkshore Group…”

“That’s why I pulled out a strand of her hair to verify my deductions. Guess what I found?” Ashton asked.

“She really is sick?”

“It’s not a sickness. She’s been poisoned, and I’m 100% positive it was Hank who poisoned her. She’s suffering from a parasitic poison, which is quite uncommon, and Hank so happens to be a practitioner of the parasitic arts.”

Narrowing his eyes, he continued, “Considering what you said earlier, if Natalie dies, Hank, her only living relative, can legitimately inherit Yorkshore Group. This is clearly a plot to murder for profit.”

Sylvia’s eyes widened in disbelief. Yet the more she thought about it, the more it made sense.

“What are you planning to do, Ashton?”

“Let’s just head inside Evermore Club first,” Ashton said. “Isaac, stay on the lookout here. If you see Natalie coming out, inform me at once.”

Moments later, Ashton and Sylvia walked into Evermore Club.

On the first floor was a bar, the main source of the establishment’s patrons. However, even at the peak hours for a business like this, there were few customers around. Most of the staff stood around with listless expressions. Sylvia introduced the place to Ashton. “We can fit over ten thousand people in the bar on the first floor, Ashton. The second floor houses a spa and a beauty salon. On the third floor, we have the space for private functions.

“The fourth floor consists of guest rooms, while the fifth floor is a fully licensed casino. And on the sixth floor, we have a restaurant, a gym, and a swimming pool…”

“It’s quite a big place,” Ashton remarked.

“That’s right,” Sylvia replied. “Evermore Club is sure to be a cash cow if it can operate smoothly. Unfortunately, it also means that if business doesn’t go well, it’ll burn through money extremely fast, too.”

Pouting, she added, “If you hadn’t taken it over, Ashton, I would’ve had to give it up with a broken heart.”

Then, she proceeded to clap her hands and summon all the staff. “Come over here for a moment. Let me introduce to everyone the new person in charge of Evermore Club!”

Soon enough, Evermore Club’s hosts, hostesses, and all the other staff members gathered in neat rows in front of Ashton and Sylvia.

All of them studied Ashton curiously.

They’d already heard that Evermore Club was getting a new boss, but none had expected it to be someone as plain and unassuming as Ashton. To make matters worse, they’d heard that he was a divorced man who’d been kicked out of the house by Roxy!

Felice Hammond, the manager of Evermore Club, and Kurt Webster, the head of security, stood right at the front. They were also the ones who looked the most displeased.

Chapter 70

Before Ashton showed up, the two of them practically had full control over Evermore Club. They were now feeling threatened by the sudden arrival of a new boss.

“Hi, everyone! From today onward, Ashton here will be running Evermore Club. He will be leading us into a new and glorious era for the club. Let us all give him a warm welcome!” Sylvia announced in excitement before starting a round of applause.

Alas, the applause was scattered and barely audible. The hosts, hostesses, and all the other staff exchanged looks. Clearly, they were unhappy with Sylvia’s arrangements.

Taking a deep breath, Felice stepped forward and declared, I cannot accept this, Ms. Langley!”

“I don’t accept it either!” Kurt followed suit.

“What do you not accept?” Sylvia questioned.
