A collective sigh went through the crowd as the answer came. No one was surprised.

The Dominion Vanguard was one of the Sage’s most powerful backers. Expecting them to move against him was a fantasy. Ashton wasn’t surprised either. He already knew exactly what kind of man Ronan was.

He shifted his gaze to Logan, the head of the Empyrean Sentinel. He wanted to know if Logan was any different from the Dominion Vanguard.

Logan raised his head and met Ashton’s gaze. He pressed his hand down on the documents and fell into a long silence before speaking.

“Ashton, the evidence you provided is critical. We will examine it thoroughly and hold a meeting to discuss our course of action.” Those few words caused the hearts of Ashton’s supporters to sink. The light in their eyes faded. It was clear now that the Empyrean Sentinel, the Dominion Vanguard, and Flint were all cut from the same cloth.

Some people wore expressions of total disappointment, their smiles bitter and helpless. Others were consumed by rage. They pointed at Logan and Ronan, cursing them openly.

“Weren’t the Dominion Vanguard and the Empyrean Sentinel founded to punish evil and protect our nation? Now you have a traitor standing right in front of you, a man with countless crimes to his name, and you’re just going to watch him celebrate his birthday?

“You’re doing nothing? What the hell do we need your bullshit organizations for?”

“Watch your mouth!” Felix barked. “Who said we’re doing nothing? Everything requires due process. These so–called documents are still just Ashton’s side of the story. Everyone here knows the history between him and the Sage. This is a massive accusation. We have to be cautious.”

“Exactly. We aren’t ignoring the matter. We’re treating it with the seriousness it deserves.”

“Bullshit!” Someone spat on the ground in disgust. “How can you be so shameless? You take a filthy conspiracy and dress it up as due process. You have no soul. I’m sickened just looking at you.”

“That’s enough!” Ronan snapped, his gaze hardening. “Since when does our organization answer to the likes of you? This matter will wait until after tonight’s banquet.”

Logan remained silent, letting out a quiet sigh. If he weren’t so focused on seizing Javonbury and bringing the city under the Empyrean Sentinel’s control, he would have convicted Flint on the spot. He reminded himself that everything has its own priority.

“Ashton! You have slandered me time and again. Today, you’re going to answer for it. Otherwise, I will never let you leave,” Flint demanded and let out a cold laugh.

Tricks like these might damage his reputation, but they wouldn’t shake his grip on power. As long as Ashton died tonight, he would be fine. At worst, he would just find a scapegoat to take the fall.

Ashton ignored him. His gaze swept over the representatives of the Dominion Vanguard and the Empyrean Sentinel before he broke into a contemptuous smile.
