Faye had no interest in arguing with Wynter. Her attention shifted to Ashton, whose body was drenched in blood. An inexplicable ache rose in her chest, and her face filled with worry.

“Dad… Is Ashton going to lose?”

“Not necessarily,” George said grimly.

“That brat is a reckless genius. He’s risking everything in this fight to find Cassian’s weakness and figure out how to defeat him. And while he’s doing that, he’s still setting up the Quadrant Spirit Convergence Array. The outcome of this fight isn’t decided yet.

He added with a smile, “I have to admit, your mother has good judgment. Ashton is talented. He’s more than worthy of being my son–in–law.”

George had fought Ashton earlier. He knew exactly where Ashton’s limits lay and how terrifying Ashton became when he fought without regard for his own life.

Faye quietly let out a breath of relief.

Julia took her daughter’s hand and said softly, “If Ashton dies, you need to move on. You can’t keep holding on to him.”

“He won’t die,” Wanda replied stubbornly.

Julia shot Shane and the others from the Heavenly Medical Pavilion a sideways glance. Then, she turned back to Ashton, still fighting while drenched in blood, and shook her head.

“No one lives forever. Ashton made the wrong choice, and that choice has already sealed his fate. Wanda, you need to understand something. A person’s strength has limits. Ashton may be a genius, but this world has never lacked geniuses.

“Watching the man you love die in front of you will hurt, but it may also be the lesson you need.”

“Mom! What if Ashton wins?” Wanda asked through clenched teeth. “Will you stop forcing me to marry into the Heavenly Physician Pavilion?”

She went on, “I want to be with Ashton.”

It was the first time she had spoken so openly about her feelings. She was truly afraid. If Ashton died, she didn’t know how she

would survive it.
