“Wiona, if you were really safe, why did you disappear for so long? Why didn’t you come home or even show your face? Now the whole family is being dragged through the mud because everyone thinks you might be dead.”
“Was this on purpose?” Daniel’s tone was sharp.
“Did you set us up? Were you just waiting to watch us become a joke?”
“Are you trying to get back at Jace for what he did to your marriage?”
“If all of this really is your doing, how dare you come back here at all?”
Daniel was every bit the head of the Salisbury family, quick to see through anything. Wiona felt almost exposed under his stare, her nerves threatening to give her away. Before she could respond, Jace stepped between them.
“Dad, Wiona didn’t do this,” he said firmly.
“She was in a coma, burning with a fever for days. She had no idea what was happening out here. If nobody had found her, she really might not have made it.”
“And her vocal cords were damaged by the fever. She can’t talk.”
Daniel glanced at him, skeptical. “Is that true?”
Jace nodded, serious. “I’ve checked everything. The records from the clinic are real.”
“Mr. Sullivan, it’s ready. Here’s the list you asked for.”
Korey handed over the file, his expression uneasy. Conrad noticed but didn’t say anything. He glanced at the list, and the moment he saw it, he went completely still.
Korey could only watch in shock. It was rare to see Mr. Sullivan lose his composure, but this was just too unbelievable.
There, among the names of women who’d had IVF, was one name neither of them could have ever expected to see.
Conrad stared, the name burning in his mind. Wiona Morgan.
