Jace looked furious, his eyes locked on Wiona as if he could force an answer out of her by sheer will. She didn’t even glance his way. It was like she couldn’t hear him, like her world had shrunk down to just Grandma Grace lying in that hospital bed.
Jace clenched his jaw so hard it looked painful. If she wanted to ignore him, fine. He had plenty of ways to make her talk.
Wiona stayed by Grandma Grace’s side for as long as she could, but there was nothing more she could do. She still showed no signs of waking up. Wiona finally left for the press conference, where she calmly explained to the reporters that she’d been sick these past few days, which was why no one had seen her. Any other rumors, she said, were just that—rumors, nothing more. She didn’t bother to mention the gossip about Jace and Kellen at the villa, which seemed to make Jace even more uneasy.
He leaned in, his voice soft but meant for everyone to hear. “Thank you, honey. I know I made some really bad choices before, but I swear, I’m going to fix things. I’ll treasure our marriage. I don’t want it to just be a business arrangement. I’ll be a good husband, I promise.”
He gazed at her, eyes full of supposed love. The whole scene looked straight out of a drama, with the once-reckless rich boy humbling himself for the girl everyone thought was just a fake heiress. The live stream lit up with comments.
“No way, is this for real? A bad boy turning over a new leaf right in front of us?”
“Weren’t they an arranged couple? This really is that marriage-turned-love story everyone loves!”
“Why am I actually swooning right now? This is too much…”
But not everyone was buying it.
“Yeah, just wait until your husband’s old flame moves in with you, has candlelit dinners with your husband and mother-in-law, and shares passionate kisses with him in some secret hideaway. Still think it’s cute?”
“Girl, don’t trust a single word. He might be hot, but he’s never getting over his first love.”
“Exactly. Divorce him already!”
The PR team scrambled to squash the negative comments, but more and more voices popped up, questioning whether Jace was just acting, whether a guy like him could ever change, and if the whole event was just for show.
Wiona had no idea about the online chaos. She just forced a polite smile at Jace’s awkward confession, thinking of the massive compensation waiting for her. Then, as she looked up, she spotted Kellen in the crowd. Even with a mask, Wiona recognized her instantly.
He raised his hand and slapped Jace hard across the face. Wiona winced, surprised at how satisfying it was to see.
Daniel caught her reaction and tried to soften his expression, but his tone stayed harsh. “Listen carefully. If you even think about seeing Kellen again, I’ll take it as you giving up on the Salisbury Corporation. I’ll take you off the board and you’ll lose your spot as heir. Wiona managed to have twins once. She can do it again. Got it?”
Jace stared at him, stunned. “Dad?”
Wiona was just as shocked. The last thing she wanted was to be tied to this family forever, and she definitely wasn’t signing up for more twins.
“Dad, please don’t be upset,” she said quickly. “Maybe Jace just wanted to talk things through with Kellen. It’s better to end things properly than leave them unresolved. Please, just give him a chance.”
Inside, she was thinking, if those two split for good, her plans would be finished. They needed to stay together. Jace, don’t let a little pressure keep you from your true love. Fight for her, so when the time comes for me to get my divorce, I can walk away clean.
She grabbed Jace’s sleeve, her voice warm and supportive. “Jace, I believe in you.”
